How to Take Care of Your Nails While Abstaining From Acrylic

For those who love long talons, acrylics are often a go-to request at the nail salon. The artificial nail can be made into any length or shape, leaving nails feeling strong and durable. But as exquisite as acrylic nails look exquisite, they can have a less-than-wonderful effect on your actual nails.

Beneath the extensions, natural nails typically become weak and damaged, prompting the desire for a new set to cover them up. It’s a vicious cycle. Letting your nails have a break once in a while is super important, but we obviously don’t want to cause them any more damage. Here are some tips (pardon the pun) to help.

A Coat of Armor

Taking a break from acrylics doesn’t mean that your nails need to be totally bare. Invest in a base coat or polish with a formula that is specially designed to strengthen your talons.

Moisture, Moisture, Moisture

Keeping your nails moisturized will help to prevent breakage while leaving them looking well-groomed. Keep some hand lotion and cuticle oil beside your bed so you remember to apply it at least once a day.

Strength Starts on the Inside

What we put into our bodies is just as important as what we put on them. Stock up on foods that are rich in biotin like eggs, salmon, spinach, and sweet potatoes as this will help strengthen your nails. Biotin can also be consumed in the form of a supplement, but getting the vitamin naturally through nutrition is a top choice.
