Saying that you’re going to start reading and doing it are two completely different things. You might buy five books at your nearest Barnes and Noble, get all excited about reading them, and then three months later you realize you only read the first four pages of one of them. If you’re trying to read more in your life but find yourself struggling to start, here are some tips to help you out.
Set Realistic Goals
How about instead of buying five books at Barnes and Noble, you buy just one? Focus on one book and one book only, and then set realistic goals for how much you’re going to read per day. One chapter a day? One chapter per week? There really are no rules. Just start with whatever you feel truly comfortable with to get the ball rolling.
Set Times
If you have specific times that you read—such as with your afternoon tea or right before bed—it’ll be a lot easier to hold yourself accountable. Don’t be harsh with yourself if you miss one, but remind yourself that you’ll make up for it the next day.
Pick Books You Actually Care About
Don’t buy books that your friends think are cool—because you’ll never care enough to actually read them. Buy books you have a genuine interest in, and you’ll find yourself reading more than you ever thought possible.
