How Much Should You Tip Hotel Housekeeping?

Exploring new places by day and sleeping in the swankiest hotels by night – traveling is a luxurious adventure, but there’s something we often take for granted. Having clean rooms, with fresh sheets, and new toiletries supplied daily is all made possible by the hardworking housekeeping staff. But, while we’re in the midst of our vacation, many of us forget to tip them.

Knowing how much to tip is tricky, especially when it comes to hotel services because we already shell out a lot of money for the room. When tipping, keep in mind how much you can afford to tip, how much cash you have on you, and how your stay way.

In general, the rule is to tip 18 to 20 percent for service jobs. But, when you add this up for hotel stays, if you spend $200 per night, you’re looking at tipping an extra $40, which is quite extravagant.

The general consensus is to tip between $2 to $5 per night and to tip each day, to make sure the person who cleans your room that day receives the tip. If the housekeeping staff does an exceptional job it’s okay to leave a little bit more tip, like $4 to $6.
