Here’s How Much You Should Tip Your Hairdresser

Golden caramel hair, bangs, bobs, shags – we could go on and on with all the new hairstyle trends this season and to get them you’ll have to visit a salon. We love getting our hair done, but one thing we can never quite figure out is how much to tip out hairdresser. We don’t want to appear cheap, but haircuts are expensive, so what’s the right amount to tip?

What’s the Standard?

The standard is around 20%, so if you pay $200 for color and a cut, you should tip around $40. This percentage doesn’t change based on if you receive a haircut or highlights; it’s the standard among services.

Of course, feel free to tip more or less based on your relationship with your hairdresser and how satisfied you are with the final product.

What If You Don’t Like It?

Should you still tip if you don’t like the haircut? It’s totally up to you, but in general, if you’re not satisfied, you should always let your stylist know you’re not thrilled. This way, at least you’re giving them a chance to fix it.

Who Should You Tip?

Do you need to tip the person who washes your hair or the owner of the salon? Again, this is up to you, but it’s always nice to tip if you can. Even if you’re only able to tip your hair washer $5, it’s still a nice gesture. To be honest, we’ve never thought of tipping the shop owners. It’s definitely not mandatory, but if you can, tip them 20%.
