Have a Vision Before Starting a New Art Project

When starting a new art project, whether it be a painting, a sculpture, or a new song, it’s important to have a rough vision before you start. This might seem obvious, but it’s quite common for people to just jump into something without thinking twice. This can be a fun way to operate for even the most talented artists, but here’s why a vision can optimize your results hundred-fold.

You Know Where You’re Going

If you know what you’re trying to accomplish upfront, it’ll give you so much peace of mind. By the way, just because you have a vision doesn’t mean you have to stick to it the whole way through. Having a vision just means that you have a plan—but detours are still strongly encouraged. The whole point of your vision is that even after going on your detours, you’ll eventually find your way back to your original goal.

It Doesn’t Have To Be Concrete

It’s important to note that having a vision doesn’t mean that you know exactly how everything is going to turn out. Instead, think of it more like a basic template, or a rough sketch in your mind. It’s important to have somewhat of an idea in your head instead of just meandering around aimlessly. Interestingly enough, once you’ve got some direction, you’ll feel freer to express yourself artistically within those boundaries.
