Find the Weight Room Intimidating? Here’s How to Overcome Your Fear

If you’ve ever stepped foot in a gym, it’s likely that there’s one area you try to avoid—the weight lifting room. It’s bombarded by buff men in muscle tanks or women in just sports bras and biker shorts, and it can be an intimidating place. It’s easy to avoid it at all costs, but then you’re missing out on strength training. Here are some tips to help you feel more confident in the weight room.

Have a Plan Before You Go

It’s easy to feel self-conscious when you’re wandering around the gym trying to figure out what exercises to do. Before you head to the gym, come up with a list of exercises to do that day.

Find a Welcoming Gym

Finding the right gym is much like choosing a life partner—you may have to go through a bunch until you get to your perfect match. Many gyms have trial weeks or will give you a tour so you can get a feel for the gym.

Ask For Help

Nothing’s worse than spending all of your allotted time at the gym trying to figure out how a machine works or adjusting it to the right size. Next time you’re stuck, just as a gym employee.

No One’s Watching

Chances are that people will feel just as uncomfortable as you do and are too busy focusing on their workout to be bothered with you. If you drop weights or fail at a set, don’t sweat it and move on.
