Winter conjures up images of cozy fireplaces, frolicking in snow, and sipping hot cocoa, but in reality, it comes with dry skin, frizzy hair, and chapped lips. Can we get a refund, please? Temperatures are not set to warm up anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean our self-care has to suffer. Especially our lips.
Sunscreen, Always
Thought SPF was just for summer. No way! Sun rays are out and about throughout the year and since the skin on our lips is so delicate, make sure to give it some SPF love.
Say No to Licking and Picking
When lips are dry, our first instinct is to moisten them—usually by licking. But the enzymes in our saliva can actually have a counter effect and dry out our lips even more. Another harmful habit is picking at the skin that is flaking off. As tempting as it may be, pulling, biting, and picking can all cause even more damage.
Lather on the Lip Balm
If your lips are dry and cracking, lip balm really is your best friend. Look for a product that contains lanolin or petroleum as these can lock in moisture and smooth out the chapped skin. It’s best to avoid anything with camphor or menthol, however, as these can leave your lips feeling painful and irritated.
