Making protein-rich smoothies seems like a difficult task, and most people reach for protein powders to make it easier. If you want to up the protein content of your smoothies in a more natural way, there are many protein-rich whole foods that you can use instead.

Nuts and Nut Butters

Nuts are also known for their high protein content, but not every blender can handle them. If yours isn’t powerful enough, you can always replace nuts with nut butter—just make sure to check their labels to avoid ones with unhealthy add-ins.

Hemp Seeds

Seeds can also do wonders for the protein content of your smoothies, and it doesn’t get much better than hemp seeds since they contain 10 grams of protein per three tablespoons.

Soy Milk

If you want smoothies without dairy milk, but feel like water isn’t a good replacement, plant-based milk is your best bet. Soy milk is one of the most popular alternatives, and it doesn’t hurt its case that it’s also protein-rich.

Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is another protein-rich ingredient that you can use as a liquid base. In addition to making your smoothies creamy and delicious, plain, non-fat Greek yogurt will also up their protein content.

Smoothies are probably the easiest healthy meal to make, but you shouldn’t feel bad if they’re missing something to taste perfect. One small change can take your smoothies to a whole new level, and these quick fixes are just the thing you need if your smoothies aren’t as thick, creamy, or sweet as you want them to be.

Fixing the Thickness

Fixing smoothies that are too thick isn’t rocket science—just pour some extra water or milk into your blender, fire it up and you’re good to go. On the other hand, if your smoothies lack thickness, you can fix them by using frozen fruit and limiting the amount of used liquid.

Fixing the Sweetness

The fruits you’re using will add their own natural sweetness to your smoothie, so you shouldn’t go overboard with extra sweeteners. You can use agave, maple syrup, or honey to make your smoothies sweeter or add a few drops of lemon juice if they are too sweet.

Fixing the Creaminess

Making perfectly creamy smoothies is all about finding the balance between solid and liquid ingredients, and this is something you’ll learn as you go along. Ice cream or yogurt are often used to make smoothies creamier, but a small amount of avocados is a much healthier option.

Who doesn’t love smoothies? They’re super convenient, easy to make, and perfect for on-the-go. But, they also happen to be full of fruits and sweeteners which can leave you feeling hungry just a few hours after you’ve had one. If you’re looking for a more filling smoothie, try adding protein, healthy fats, and fiber with these ingredients.

Protein From Milk

The protein found in milk has calcium, magnesium, and all of the essential amino acids your body needs. Including milk or Greek yogurt in your smoothie will help you feel fuller longer.

Raisins

While not everyone loves raisins, they are a great natural way to get sweetness instead of adding sugars or syrups. Raisins have fiber and potassium, which will keep you satisfied.

Pulses

Have you thought of adding pulses to your smoothie? Pulses are dry, edible legumes including chickpeas, lentils, beans, and split peas. They add plant-based protein, antioxidants, and fiber. Cook them before putting them in your smoothie.

Peanut Butter

Peanut butter adds plant-based protein, healthy fat, vitamins, and minerals to your smoothie. Make a peanut butter, banana, and honey smoothie for a delicious, nutritious meal or snack.
