We all know how important self-care is for our overall health and wellness, but what isn’t always obvious is how to implement it in our daily routines. If you’re new to prioritizing self-care, there are a few simple ways to practice it every day. Here are some of our favorites.

Don’t Check Your Phone Before You’ve Gotten Out of Bed

We know it’s hard to resist the urge to scroll before you leave your comfy bed, but, seriously, this is one of the best things you can do for yourself! Giving yourself time to wake up without a screen in front of your face will help your mood. It will even give you time to have your own thoughts before being flooded with news and life updates from others.

Move Your Body Every Day

Even if it’s only five minutes of stretching or a 20-minute walk, moving your body is a great way to improve your mental health and show care for your body. Especially if your job keeps you sitting at a desk for hours on end, movement is one of the best things you can do for yourself!

Validate Your Emotions

A lot of people fall into the trap of judging their emotions. If you are ever guilty for feeling “negative” emotions, you can benefit from finding ways to validate your emotions. This can be in the form of journaling freely (without censoring what you write), meditating, or even beginning to see a therapist to work through your emotions.

Self-love is an inexhaustible source of energy that is independent of anyone and anything. When we love ourselves, the love and appreciation that comes from others is only a bonus, not the center of our lives. So, how do you do that? Here are some tips.

No One’s Perfect

Self-love is manifested in the acceptance of who we are, with our pros and cons, and is accompanied by a willingness to continue to grow and improve. This is the understanding that no one expects you to be perfect, so why should you demand it of yourself?

Accept Help

Learn to accept help from others—and even asking for help when needed. Remember, no one should do everything alone, and asking others does not indicate weakness.

Me-time

Do something you love, without it being dependent on your daily duty. Learn to play a musical instrument or sew.

Healthy Body

There is no need to do things that we are uncomfortable with, but it is important to pay attention to our bodies. Think about what is important to you in your diet, exercise weekly, and give your body enough hours of sleep. Addressing the needs of your body means respecting yourself, and your commitment to self-respect plays an important part in developing self-love.

The body positivity movement #normalizenormalbodies is taking the world by storm. Women are learning to embrace their shapes and shun the old ideas of what it means to be beautiful. Many brands, like Aerie, are helping this cause by using more diverse models and not re-touching the pictures.

Ashley Graham and Iskra Lawrence are changing the modeling industry by being authentic and unfiltered and still getting those major beauty contracts. Women are being encouraged to celebrate their bodies rather than feel ashamed.

This movement was founded by Mik Zazon, who wants to include all women in the conversation of body positivity — those who don’t fit the stereotypical label of ‘skinny’ but who aren’t ‘curvy’ either. Women who fall in the middle of these two labels and aren’t seeing their bodies represented in the media. She wants to talk about body image, self-acceptance and self love and bring this to all women.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B71zJDJJpbi/

The term ‘normal’ can be interpreted in many different ways, but Mik wants women to know that if they don’t fit into the plus-size, athletic, or skinny categories they still deserve to be a part of the body positivity movement.

Our bodies change so many times throughout our lives and this movement reminds women to show up as they are and they don’t have to fit into any mold.

Since the movement started over a year ago over 20k women have used the hashtag. These women use the platform to share their truth and use the opportunity for their voices to be heard.

Why do so many of us criticize the way we look on a daily basis? In fact, a majority of people dislike their bodies; market research from Ipsos showed that 83% of American women and 74% of American men are dissatisfied with the way they look. The good news is there are ways to start loving your bodies and they’re as easy as changing your lifestyle.

Celebrate What You Love

Our bodies are capable of doing many amazing things and it’s about time we started appreciating it for all it does for us. Your legs may be bigger than you’d like, but they help you get to all the places you need to get to throughout the day.

Avoid Triggers

Instagram can be a great tool for connecting people, but it also gives an unrealistic view of what normal people look like as many of the photos posted have been photoshopped or filters have been applied. Follow accounts that make you feel good about yourself. Other common triggers include celebrity images and the dreaded scale. Stop obsessing about trying to reach a number on the scale, after all, it’s just a number.

Donate Clothes That Don’t Fit

We’re all guilty of keeping clothes in our closets for when we finally lose that extra 15 pounds. Instead, donate these clothes to someone who can make good use of them and buy new clothes that make you feel confident and good about yourself.

We’ve all heard the terms body positivity, body confidence, self-love, and body-acceptance, but how many of us actually live by these saying? It’s so easy to be negative about our appearances and perhaps with New Years just around the corner, we can start treating our bodies with the love they deserve. If you need more inspiration, these celebrities have been opening up about their journeys of accepting themselves.

Lauren Ash

Let’s follow in the Superstore star’s New Year’s resolution to be more body positive. In an interview with US Weekly Ash said, “I just made a choice. My New Year’s resolution this year was to not speak negatively about my body to myself or to anyone else. It’s really been a mindset that’s been really positive for me, and I think that as women, especially, we’re very hard on ourselves. Trying to change that narrative and focusing on the things that you like is a really powerful tool.”

Demi Lovato

Part of the reason we love Lovato is her honesty about her mental health issues. The “Confident” singer said, “We hear the term body positivity all the time. To be honest, I don’t always feel positive about my body. Sometimes I do not like what I see. I don’t sit there and dwell on it. I also don’t lie to myself…All I have to say is ‘I’m healthy.’ In that statement, I express gratitude. I am grateful for my strength and things I can do with my body. I am saying I’m healthy and I accept the way my body is today without changing anything,” at the Teen Vogue Summit.

Sarah Hyland

We appreciate how open the Modern Family actress has been about her health conditions and how she has learned to live with them. Sarah Hyland posted a paparazzi photo that she used to hate to show her fans how she’s dealt with her insecurities after undergoing health procedures, “To my fellow #invisibleillness warriors. It’s ok to be insecure about your body. Just remember to check in with yourself at least once a day and say thank you. Our bodies have endured unfathomable feats that our minds barely have time to comprehend what has actually happened.”

Who will you be sending a Valentines card to this year? Glamour’s Charlie Howard has decided that this year, she will not be sending a love letter to her crush, but to her own body.

In a powerful letter, the body positivity columnist addressed her confidence issues and thanks her body for sticking with her in spite of any abuse she put it through. At the end of the letter, she beautifully signs off with “I am enough.”

Charlie Howard is the ambassador of Agent Provocateur, who have dedicated their Valentines advertising campaign to celebrating the female body and loving it not just in spite of, but because of any flaws.

You can read the full letter here:

To my Body,

This is a letter to say thank you: a thank you for all the times you loved me, when I showed you no love at all.
Our relationship in the past has been complicated. I spent years comparing you to numerous women I will never be, and against bodies I will never have. I based my value on what other people thought of me or saw in me,
seeking their approval before I sought my own.

My curves were shameful; my stretch marks hideous. My hair should have been different; my clothes a size smaller. I was never satisfied with what you gave me, even when you tried telling me I was enough.
I wanted to change you in the hope someone else would love me in the ways I could not love you.

But, in reality, you’ve loved me better than anyone else ever could; more than anyone ever will.

I put so much focus on looking perfect on the outside that I forgot about the love you offered me from within. And the truth is, Body, you were perfect already – I was just blind to it.

When I abused you, you never left. When I criticised you, you never fought back.
You have repaired and renewed me; kept my heart beating and my blood pumping. You never gave up on me throughout all the times I was ready to give up on you. And, years later, when I finally realised how
much I needed you, you continued to love me like you had from the beginning.

That is true love.

So this is a promise – a promise to love you, flaws and all, and to make up for the years I didn’t realise your worth. And while my skin might not be the smoothest, or my hips the smallest, you’ve taught me what I needed to know:

I am enough.

So we’re in this together for the long run. Because you may not be perfect, Body, but you’re the only one I’ve got.

All my love, Charli xxx
