]]>If there are some accounts that trigger your shopping habit more than others, it’s time to unfollow and unsubscribe. The truth is, they will always make you want more of what you don’t have, and using all your willpower to resist is not a good long-term strategy. Out of sight, out of mind.
By giving yourself cleaning chores you will be physically unable to simultaneously browse social media and you may even find the items you forgot about as you clean! Additionally, having a clean and calm environment will make you want new things less and be grateful for what you have more.
Life shouldn’t be all about chores and not letting yourself have fun. By all means, find activities you can do alone, with your partner, or with your family, that don’t cost a ton and that will give you so many fun memories.

]]>There are many ways to treat yourself that don’t require spending any money. These include taking advantage of loyalty programs or rewards and finding free entertainment like library cards or festivals.
Some ways to splurge without it harming your bank account are to eat in before heading to your local bar for drinks, buying one expensive food or drink item per week, or purchasing a nicer product every so often. Once a month buy that expensive wine you love or treat yourself to a brand name beauty product instead of drug store ones.
There are always larger purchases that we can’t seem to live without, whether it’s a new smartwatch, designer boots, or weekend getaway. So instead of feeling guilty about spending money on these things, save up for them. Put aside some money each time you get paid or gather up loose change in a jar and let the money accumulate for a couple of months. When you’ve reached the amount of money you need for that item you absolutely want, go ahead and buy it! You deserve it.

]]>Impulse buying is destroying your wallet and your mental health, especially if you should be saving or putting that money toward something else so you keep giving yourself a hard time whenever you spend something. If you’re constantly on the look for the next thing to purchase, a no buy challenge may be the right thing for you. Here’s how to break it down to doable steps so it doesn’t get overwhelming.
For starters, most people do a no buy month, but you don’t have to wait for the next month to begin in order to start. Just pick a date and challenge yourself not to buy anything for 30 days.
If shopping is a habit of yours, you’ll probably feel tempted to shop multiple times during your no-buy month. When you feel that urge, go through the things you already own and you’ll probably find something you forgot about so it will be as if you got something new.
It would be too easy to spend the money you just saved on something else rather than shopping, such as dinners out, right? Don’t fall into this trap. Stay motivated by setting long-term goals that will be easier to achieve if you stay disciplined.

]]>If you want to save money while you save the planet, here are some ways you can get started.
A big part of living sustainably is not wasting anything, especially not throwing away things like plastic items. By reusing and re-purposing items, you can save yourself money because you don’t need to buy more things, you already have them! All you have to do is see what things you might be tempted to throw away and see how you can creatively reuse them.
Fast fashion might seem cheap at the time, but if your clothes are always getting holes and you need to buy more, eventually those costs add up. Instead, investing in clothes are made well so they will last over time and over trends, you save a lot in the long run.
Whether you want to go full out and give up your car or just stop using it as much, using sustainable transportation like walking, cycling, or public transit will save you so much money. Without a car, you don’t need to pay for insurance, and when you don’t use it a lot, you don’t have to pay as much in gas or maintenance.

]]>Dumpster diving is perfectly legal as long as the trash isn’t behind a fence that says private property, so there’s nothing to fear! Especially if you live in a big city where places leave their trash out on the curb, there’s no harm in taking some rubber gloves and going through a bit of trash. Often places will throw away perfectly good products that are even completely sealed. And those products are usually not even in a bag with real trash, just premade sandwiches, salads, and other foods that are being tossed.
While you don’t have to make this practice something regular, there is something to be said about getting food not only for free but food that would otherwise go straight to a landfill. If you’re someone on a budget or who wants to make an impact on the environment, consider dumpster diving.

]]>You can try it for a month or, if you feel especially overwhelmed with stuff, go for a full year immediately. Those who have tried it claim that it has helped them switch focus from consumerism and material things to people around them and experiences. Chances are you have enough stuff to go through a year-long shopping ban already, but you may want to take inventory of everything you have first and see where you stand.
Of course, you can modify the shopping ban and make it fit your personal needs. If you have too many clothes, make it “no clothes shopping” for a desired amount of time. The same goes for makeup, gadgets, and many other categories. You can give yourself exceptions and decide what you’re allowed to buy – for example, replacements, underwear, stuff you use up fast.
With regular budgeting, it can get difficult to simply spend less. Once you make one impulse purchase you’re more likely to make another one, and then another one… Shopping ban prevents this and makes you realize how many stuff you already own and can use.

]]>Sometimes spending is actually investing and will bring you more as the time goes by. Here’s when and on what you shouldn’t save.
Health is priceless. And while more and more people are getting conscious about regular doctor checkups, it’s baffling how little attention people give to dental hygiene. It’s always cheaper to prevent the damage than to fix it!
It’s a broad term, but safety should be high on your list of spending priorities. From regularly taking your car to the mechanic to having a home protection system, investing in safety can save you both money and frustration over time.
The last one is for people who spend a lot of time in front of a computer, but quality shoes and mattress are for everybody – make sure that the items you spend most of your days in/on are top-quality and help your body stay healthy and strong.
The one thing that will always pay off is investing in yourself. Education and gaining knowledge is a great long-term investment that can bring you more money later or simply improve the quality of your life.

When you’re at a restaurant, don’t just look at the meal prices. Prices of drinks add up to the final bill, so if you can, choose water instead of beer or wine.
Before you start saving, clear any debts you have, such as unpaid bills, credit cards, etc.
You can track your spendings with one of many available apps to find out where you spend more than you think you do.

To make sure you’ll stick to your saving plan, think ahead how you will spend it. Are you saving up for something you want to buy? Even if you want to save money just to be sure you have a financial buffer, you can think of a small reward to buy with a part of the saved money.
You’re at a store where wines are on sale, but you don’t need any as a gift right now? Buy it anyway, so you won’t have to when someone’s birthday or any other celebration is near and the sales are gone.
