As the holiday season approaches, many individuals find themselves grappling with increased stress and anxiety because of the pressure for holidays to look perfect. Embracing strategies to manage holiday stress can help individuals navigate this festive time with more joy and peace. Here are four strategies to manage holiday stress and embrace the season.

Set Boundaries

Firstly, setting boundaries and prioritizing commitments is essential. Learning to set boundaries and prioritize your commitments is key to managing stress during the holiday season, as establishing clear boundaries can help protect mental well-being and prevent burnout. It’s easy to fall into the temptation of saying “yes” to every invitation or task during the holidays, but this can lead to burnout before the season even begins. According to DolarHoy, Nawal Alomari advises, “You don’t have to do everything that you’re being asked to do. Decide what you’re willing to do, and outside of that, remind yourself that you can say no.” Setting boundaries can help manage anxiety during the holiday season, whether you are the host or a guest. This includes considering in advance how long you want to stay at family gatherings and communicating that clearly, as well as not trying to do everything yourself and considering delegating or sharing tasks like organizing the Christmas party if they are unmanageable.

Don’t Overspend

Secondly, managing financial stress during the holidays is crucial. Hello! Magazine reports that financial stress is one of the most common types during this time of year, and it can contribute to increased anxiety and cloud the holiday spirit, leading to anxiety about overspending. Setting a realistic budget for gifts, food, and activities well in advance can help manage financial stress during the holidays. La Vanguardia points out that economic circumstances can also cause stress during Christmas. Psychologists recommend not basing Christmas on money, as people should not try to buy happiness with an avalanche of gifts during the holidays, especially as many will arrive at Christmas Eve with less than in previous years, which may clash with societal ideals. It’s a good idea to discuss expectations with family members to establish guidelines for gift-giving that align with one’s budget to alleviate financial pressure. Focusing on thoughtful gestures over expensive gifts, such as handmade crafts or quality time spent together, aligns with the true spirit of Christmas. “The true spirit of Christmas doesn’t hinge on how much is spent, but rather on the love and joy shared with those around you,” Hello! Magazine states.

Practice Self-Care

Thirdly, practicing self-care and mindfulness can significantly reduce holiday stress. DolarHoy suggests that amid shopping, preparations, and gatherings, it is essential to dedicate time to your well-being, including reserving at least 15 minutes a day to do something that relaxes you, such as reading, meditating, or simply taking a walk. Incorporating mindfulness practices into daily routines can help combat feelings of being frazzled and unable to enjoy the moment during the holiday season. Setting aside brief moments each day to pause, breathe, and reflect on gratitude can enhance the enjoyment of the holiday season. DolarHoy recommends trying to get enough sleep, maintaining a balanced diet, and engaging in physical activity. These practices will help you feel better physically and manage your emotions better.

Hello! Magazine advises incorporating healthier snacks and meals into daily routines to create balance during the festive season. Prioritizing self-compassion and not judging oneself for indulging in holiday treats is important; indulging is part of what makes Christmas lovely.

Lastly, seeking support and maintaining social connections is vital during the holiday season. If someone is experiencing stress or sadness during the holidays, they should not hesitate to seek support, as reaching out for support can make a real difference. Talking to friends, family, or professionals who can provide encouragement and advice is beneficial during challenging times. Having open conversations about feelings can ease the weight of loneliness and help individuals feel seen during the holidays. “Seeking support is a strength, not a weakness; it’s important to remember that you’re not alone during the festive season,” Hello! Magazine reminds readers. In cases of distance, La Vanguardia advises finding alternative ways to enjoy the holidays and “not focus on the discomfort.” Being intentional about your need for connection, such as through Zoom sessions or phone calls, can help you get through the holiday season, especially for those dealing with distance.

By implementing these strategies—setting boundaries and prioritizing commitments, managing financial stress, practicing self-care and mindfulness, and seeking support—individuals can better manage holiday stress and embrace the true spirit of the season.

If you work a full-time week, you may be stressing over the limited time you have to make exercize a focus. Between work, cooking, household chores, socializing, and sleep, it’s easy to let physical activity slide to the bottom of the to-do pile. Whilst each of us should be aiming to get physically active for as long as possible each week, the good news is that recent studies have indicated that just 10 minutes of walking each day can have a big impact on your body and mind. If you need motivation to step outside, check out these key reasons why even just a short walk has a huge impact.

Improve Circulation

Walking is one of the best ways to get the heart beating that bit faster, thereby improving blood flow and circulation. A 10 minute stroll (or, to up the ante, a brisk-paced walk) may not be the most cardio-intensive workout, but it will help keep everything in check and see you stay healthy until the spring and summer allow for more time spent outdoors.

Re-energize

If you’re working in a desk-bound job, the chances are that by midday you’re starting to flag and feel a little lethargic. Stepping outside, even for ten minutes, can help reset your mind and body and provide you with more energy for the rest of the working day. It will also stop your muscles cramping as you won’t be staying in one seated position for hours on end.

Mindful Moment

As you step out on your walk, make an effort to take in your surroundings and notice the things around you. This will help take your mind off work (which will probably reduce stress levels) and give you a moment to yourself in the middle of a busy day. Taking mindful moments can improve overall contentment and improve relaxation, as we stop and consider the world outside.

Ten minutes doesn’t sound like much, but it can add up to have a huge difference on your overall mental, physical, and emotional health.

We all know how important self-care is for our overall health and wellness, but what isn’t always obvious is how to implement it in our daily routines. If you’re new to prioritizing self-care, there are a few simple ways to practice it every day. Here are some of our favorites.

Don’t Check Your Phone Before You’ve Gotten Out of Bed

We know it’s hard to resist the urge to scroll before you leave your comfy bed, but, seriously, this is one of the best things you can do for yourself! Giving yourself time to wake up without a screen in front of your face will help your mood. It will even give you time to have your own thoughts before being flooded with news and life updates from others.

Move Your Body Every Day

Even if it’s only five minutes of stretching or a 20-minute walk, moving your body is a great way to improve your mental health and show care for your body. Especially if your job keeps you sitting at a desk for hours on end, movement is one of the best things you can do for yourself!

Validate Your Emotions

A lot of people fall into the trap of judging their emotions. If you are ever guilty for feeling “negative” emotions, you can benefit from finding ways to validate your emotions. This can be in the form of journaling freely (without censoring what you write), meditating, or even beginning to see a therapist to work through your emotions.

In our modern society, it can become easy to become addicted to the world of celebrities. The lives they need, the parties they attend, the way they seem to always look flawless—it’s almost hypnotizing. However, while it can be nice to look up to some of these stars, it’s incredibly important to not let them take over your life.

Don’t Lose Sight Of Your Values

It’s one thing if a celebrity looks so flawless that they’ve inspired you to try out new looks and maybe get into a healthy routine. But the second you start starving yourself or hating yourself because you don’t look exactly like your favorite star on the silver screen, that’s when you know you’ve gone too far. Scale back and reflect on what really matters to you in life.

They’re Just People

It’s important to remember that celebrities are just regular people who either worked really hard, got super lucky, or had a combination of both. For whatever reason, they’re now living a life in the spotlight, but such a life may not be as easy as you think it is. Even though they might seem like they have it all, they might be going through some hard times as well. So if you’re feeling a bit too jealous of stars, count your blessings and put everything into perspective.

The importance of mental health cannot be overstated. Luckily, there are many ways to work on our mental health, and one of those ways is through music. While listening to music is an obvious iteration of that, an additional caveat that’s worth noting is the benefit to playing music as well. Here’s how learning an instrument can improve your mental health.

Giving Joy to Others

There’s something truly heartwarming about giving of yourself to others. Just as we noted earlier that listening to music can improve one’s mental health, the idea that you can give that joy to someone else by learning to play music—that in itself can truly boost your mood and improve your mental health.

Feeling of Accomplishment

Like all things in life, there’s a wonderful feeling of satisfaction one gets when they accomplish something difficult. Thus, learning an instrument is a great way to feel accomplished and feel satisfied as a result.

Discipline

Learning to play an instrument requires a lot of discipline and focus. Therefore, if you’ve learned how to play an instrument, chances are that you’ve gone through a real process of disciplining yourself and finding focus. This, too, can be a good way to achieve balance in life and restore certain semblances of your mental health.

It seems like now, more than ever, we rely on social media to tell us what’s going on in the world. Ever since the pandemic started, we stopped seeing friends and other people as often and many of us began using social media even more than before.

The line between work life and private life has never been this blurred. We spend most of our days staring into some kind of screen, and so much screen time is not good for our physical or mental health. Here’s how to have a healthier relationship with social media and the devices in your life.

Schedule Time

You don’t have to quit social media completely if you don’t want to, but there’s a difference between allowing yourself 20 minutes of allotted time once or twice per day and spending half the day on your phone.

Be Mindful

If you want to check Instagram stories as you’re having your morning coffee, that’s okay, and so is opening up an app to find particular information you’ve seen before. However, it’s important not to turn these short sessions into hours of mindless scrolling.

Mental Health Check

If you’re feeling down, perhaps another hour spent with your phone in the bed isn’t the best course of action. Consider going for a walk or making yourself a nice meal instead and you’ll instantly feel motivated for the rest of the day.

Whether work from home has been your reality for years or only for the past several months, by now we can all agree that this setup is definitely not easy. While working from home has some advantages over going to the office, numerous challenges make it more difficult than we imagined.

Of course, the global pandemic only adds stress and doesn’t help the overall situation, so here’s one important thing you need to do every day for mental health.

Taking mental health breaks is important but often overlooked. Between work and taking care of the home (and kids if you have them), it seems like there’s less time than ever to take breaks if you want to stay productive.

One thing you shouldn’t do is make mental health just another thing on your to-do list. That’s not the way to stay healthy in the long run and you need to truly understand why taking breaks is important and in what ways you can best use them. Some people enjoy taking a nap, others go out for a walk, and some like to call a dear person.

Disconnecting from work and your desk space several times per day or as often as you need it will make you more productive and happier in the long run.

Productivity is often seen as something we should all strive for but it’s easy to start feeling like you need to be productive at every moment of every day. We live in a society that puts a lot of value on being productive and working a lot and we often forget the importance of free time without feeling guilty about it.

Stop Comparing

Comparing yourself to others is the easiest way to feel bad, no matter how much work you actually do and what you achieve. Instead of trying to do what “everyone else” is doing, think about what you really want and use your time wisely.

Listen to Your Gut

Does this sound familiar: you think you want to do a certain activity but you find yourself constantly postponing it? It’s important to listen to your gut in situations like this and adjust your goals accordingly.

Enjoy Free Time

It’s crucial to learn how to enjoy your free time and not feel guilty every time you’re not doing something productive. Finding hobbies and ways to relax will do you a lot of good in the long run, especially when it comes to mental health.
