At the beginning of the new year, it can be tempting to splash the cash on new aspirational hobbies that you think will make you a better version of yourself. However, buying is not the same as doing! Before you start browsing new workout gear, expensive cameras, or home-brewing kits, make sure you have time to invest in your new hobby.

Try it Out First

If you’re keen to take up a new hobby, find ways to try it out for free to see if it’s a good fit first. Find free community fitness classes, borrow equipment from a library or colleague, or do a skill-swap with a friend.

Use What You Have

Find things you already have lying around the house before splashing out on new equipment. If you want to take up yoga, wear an old t-shirt and leggings and do YouTube led yoga sessions before heading out to Lululemon and buying a studio membership.

If you want to take up drawing or painting, use your kids’ art materials before investing in expensive new paints.

Research

Once you have proven to yourself that you have committed yourself to your new hobby, it’s time to treat yourself to the materials you need to really get stuck in. However, be sure to research first what you really need, how to get the best deals, and whether you can get it second-hand. Waking up can be tough for some people, but jumping out of your bed as soon as you open your eyes is probably the best way to start a productive day. Not sure how to do this? Here are a few useful tips on how to start your day energized.

Don’t Snooze

Pressing the snooze button is actually a very bad habit that makes it harder for us to wake up in the morning. If you’re having trouble waking up and getting out of bed, try placing the alarm clock far away from the bed so you’ll have to get up as soon as it goes off.

Hydrate

Hydration is very important, especially after a long night of sleep. Drinking one glass of water as soon as you get out of bed in the morning can help your body wake up and you’ll start your day refreshed.

Sunshine

Some studies have shown that waking up to sunlight is much better for us because light tells our brains that it’s time to wake up. Not to mention it’s much more enjoyable to wake up and start your day in a light and inspiring room.

Workout

Working out is the best way to boost your energy levels, so it’s always a great idea to start your day with a short run, light exercises or yoga.

Sometimes you just can’t get to the gym, whether you finished work late, it is pouring outside or you just don’t have the time to fit it into your day. You don’t have to worry, though as there are tons of exercises you can do at home and still get a great workout in.

You don’t need any equipment and you can simply put on your favorite tunes and wear your ugliest gym clothes in the comfort of your own home. Here are 5 great exercises for you to do at home and feel great after.

Squats

Stand straight with your legs a little wider than hip-width apart. You want to make sure your knees are in line with your toes when you go down. Squat down and then straighten to start position, squeezing your glutes at the top. Do 3 sets for 15 reps.

Lunges

Stand with your feet together and then take one leg back behind you. Bend the back leg and go up and down on that leg holding the core and squeezing the glutes on each rep. Do 3 sets for 12 reps on each leg.

Plank

This exercise works on all of your body but mostly your core. Go down on to your elbows, on a comfortable surface, straighten your legs and flex the feet. Engage your abs and glutes and keep the back straight. Keep the plank for 30 seconds-1 minute.

Push-ups

This exercise can be done on your knees if you find it too difficult to do with straight legs. Make sure the core is engaged at all times and the hands are slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Start in a straight arm plank then bend the elbows back, not out, and go down with the chest to the floor. Push up through the arms and chest to start position. Do 3 sets for 10-12 reps.

Hip Bridges

Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and the feet flat on the floor. Squeeze your glutes and bring the hips up and down in a controlled manner. Do 3 sets for 15 reps.
