When it comes to learning a new skill, there are two main elements that need to be addressed. The learning of it, and the doing it. If this idea sounds a little bit funky to you, bear with us for a moment because we’re about to dive in. If you’re looking to master something new, here’s why it’s crucial to focus on both of these two things.

The Learning

The learning is the intellectual side of things. It’s understanding the theory behind what makes something work, which can usually be learned from books and watching YouTube videos. Knowing the science behind something is crucial for success, but it’s not the only thing.

The Doing

Once you’ve actually learned how to do something, now it’s time to actually do it. You’ll soon find out that learning something in theory doesn’t mean you’ve learned how to do it. The value of precious experience is truly unmatched, which is why you must practice the thing you’re trying to learn as much as possible.

The Balance

Ultimately, it’s crucial that you learn to balance these two elements. Learn the theory behind it, and then practice it. Keep doing both of them consistently like a cycle, and you’ll start to find yourself improving quicker than ever.

Everyone can remember a time when they were forced to learn vocabulary. Whether that was for a big test or an area of study that was unfamiliar, vocabulary does not always have the best rap. But, it’s so important to have a broad vocabulary professionally and for the sake of being able to express yourself. Here are some easy ways for you to start building your vocabulary!

Journal

Having a journal or even a page on your phone that is dedicated to writing down new words, or words you’ve heard before but didn’t understand, is a great way to start. Keep your ears out for words you hear often, but can’t quite define, or words in books that make you pause trying to figure them out. This also goes for words in other languages you are learning!

Subscribe

There are a lot of apps and websites that have a daily email that will give you a new word to learn every day. This is a great option because you can just take a couple of minutes out of your day to read the definition without doing any research or extra work. A good exercise for retaining the word is by attempting to use it at least once in a sentence during that day.

A lot of people are on very distinct sides of this argument. While some find that consumers need to buy paper books in order to support brick-and-mortar bookstores, authors, and the book industry in general, other claim that e-readers are better for the environment since they are paperless and don’t create any waste.

If you can’t decide whether to pick up a new novel from a bookstore or buy it on your e-reader, let this guide help you out.

E-Readers

The great thing about e-readers is that you can carry hundreds of books with you without all the weight. If you are someone who travels a lot, this is a great benefit, as you don’t need to pick and choose your books. The other thing is that if you like to read in a foreign language, e-readers have dictionaries, so if you don’t understand a word, you’re just a click away from its definition.

Books

There is nothing like holding a book in your hand, seeing how many physical pages you have left in a chapter, and closing it for the last time when you’re done. Unlike e-readers, you don’t have to worry about it being charged or getting a headache from looking at a screen, which is a luxury in and of itself.
