While design is often subjective, it’s clear to anyone that certain styles have been out of fashion for years, if not decades. Here are some design choices that you’ll want to avoid so that your home doesn’t get an outdated look.

Oak Furniture

Throughout the 1980s, oak furnishings were wildly popular. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. If you want a more modern look, rather opt for some other trims of wood or perhaps ditch the wood altogether.

Themed Bedrooms

While themed bedrooms may look cute for children, the idea that adults can pull this off has been ruled out for decades. Although there’s nothing wrong with getting some pieces of furniture with patterns on, avoid allowing your entire room to have the same uniform color scheme or pattern.

Striking Floors

Avoid brightly-colored carpets, yellow-gold hardwood floors, and vinyl flooring. Instead, opt for a more subtle ceramic tiling or a lighter wood.

As the part of the house where family members gather and host friends, the living room really is the heart and soul of your home. For this reason, designing your living room well is essential to creating a beautiful home where you enjoy living. Here are some tips to help you design your dream living room.

Mix Light And Dark Colors

While too many dark colors can make a living room look gloomy, white colors can create an unhomely impression, almost making the room look “too” clean. The secret to creating a homely yet stylish living room is to contrast light and dark colors, for example, dark floors and walls with light-colored furniture.

Combine Different Upholstery

While you could purchase an entire living room set with the same color scheme, this can come across as slightly monotonous. Consider mixing and matching different styles to add some more personality to the room.

Choose Durable Materials

When selecting your furniture, practical fabrics are a necessity. After all, there’s always the possibility of spilling drinks and food, so you’ll want to ensure that your upholstery is easy to clean. Leather, denim, and corduroy are all good options.

Unless you’re incredibly lucky, the bathroom is probably the smallest room in your home. Most bathrooms could use a bit more space, but there are ways to make them look prettier and be more functional even when they’re small. Here are some.

Use Mirrors

Nothing can open up a room like mirrors. A mirror will make the space look bigger and also reflect light. If you can, consider adding a mirrored wall which will make your bathroom truly special.

Glass Shower

Shower cabins and bathtubs take up a lot of space and look bulky. Perhaps you can add glass shower doors that separate a showering corner from the rest of the bathroom for a clean look that’s also functional.

Match the Accessories

Buy a set that has a soap dispenser, brush holder, and some storage pots and your bathroom will look more put together in no time. You can also coordinate the colors of towels and other details in the room.

Well, guess where I slept last night for the first time ever? And don't I look happier than a pig in muck to be on the spare beds mattress on the floor! It's smaller and lighter to lug down from the floor above but still more comfortable than the airbed would have been (though definitely not as swish as the bed that's coming for here.. I might share a little glimpse later.. it's going to be glorious (and a proper size.. a big lump like me has gotten very used to a super king… I've taken banisters out of rented properties before just to get my old mattress up the stairs.. my long suffering Pa has vowed never to help me lift it again.. it must weigh 150kg and is a very dead weight!). . The shutters that were the bane of my life for longer than I'd like to admit when I was unpinning and restoring them did a grand job of keeping the early morning sun out… And under the glow of the bedside lamps (plugged into an extension cable for the floor below!) cast a gorgeous glow against the blue walls.. during the day the room feels light and bright and elegant but as the night draws in its cosy, sumptuous and restful… I am bloomin' THRILLED! . I've still some bits of furniture to find for this room.. but I'm waiting for the bed to arrive to get a sense of space… And then to do a bit of hunting for some art… & then I think, finally, done! Thanks so much for all the lovely comments and messages! It is hugely touching and very much makes the graft this has taken all the sweeter! Happy Friday lovely bunch! . Ok, I know I said I was waiting for the bed to arrive for finishing touches but when something gorgeous (and cheap) rocks up on FB marketplace… Well, you can't watch it slip away.. so.. behold.. the new bureau for the bedroom.. complete with the last rose from the garden.. . From the very, very small amount I know about such things, I believe it's about the same age as the house which makes me happy.. I also love a bureau in a bedroom.. there's a romanticism around having a place to write late at night.. filling a diary or journal.. or a love letter perhaps.. not that I do any of the above, but that's not the point (do love letters even exist anymore.. it's all about swiping a screen and inappropriate pictures I'm lead to believe?).. It also means when I fold the desk bit out, for now, it becomes a beard oiling & grooming station that can all be easily stashed away! . It's a tricky spot for furniture with the window so near the wall and a doorway through to the party room (handy for late night Martini).. the previous owner had a huge bank of wardrobes along this wall and it meant you couldn't open the main door to the room and it hugely compromised the symmetry of the windows.. something I love.. with its angled top, this feels just right whilst and like it's always been in the house! Very happy indeed.. even if it is missing a few handles! Happy Sunday wonderful bunch.. I've lots of fun jobs today so will keep you posted x . . . . . #bureau #office #desk #deorgian #antique #sisalrug #shutters #rug #rose #singlerose #mirror #apartmenttherapy #sodomino #houseandgarden #architecturaldesigns #interiorwarrior #abmlifeisbeautiful #pimpupmypad #colourfiedhomes #colourfulhome #styleithappy #interiorstyling #apartmenttherapy #sodomino #bedroominspiration #beautifulhomes #realhomes

Well, this is bath number 3 for Admirals.. I'm not in love with the exterior colour, but that's easily changed.. but for less than what I'd spend on a (pretty lairy!) night out I'm a very happy man! It's made of stone resin so is warmer than cast iron, and a bit lighter too (important given this has precisely 41 stairs to go up to the 2nd floor!).. it's a lot smaller than the last bath you saw me posing in but rather comfortable.. . I appreciate this picture is #instatosspottery of the highest order.. sanding bitumen does not for pretty pictures make and I was excited to share the bargain bath… And well, I needed a giggle after all the sanding.. check stories for outtakes.. think I finally nailed the classic legs in the air bath shot!… . But as I was laid there in the sunshine in my birthday suit.. I had a little brainwave… To the right of this picture, in the corner of the roof terrace there will one day (you know, once the house is finished) be a sort of outdoor living room… Well, what if I built a big corner bench/sofa thing.. and within one of the benches, there was a flip up lid.. that hid… A bath!!! . Through these doors will be the kitchen.. so plumbing will be near.. and it can literally drain away into the roof.. yesss! The kitchen will also be handy for bath time snacks and booze.. and the terrace gets the sun later than anywhere else.. remind me again why I'm spending so long creating a beautiful bathroom when I'm clearly going to be bathing out here all the time! Ha! . Happy Saturday lovely bunch.. keep an eye out today for another #beforeandafter.. namely because I'm at the barbers at 8am… I cannot wait! While social distancing many people are having nature withdrawals. It’s fine to go outside as long as you follow your local guidelines. But, if you want to avoid going outside, you can bring some outside flair into your home. Here are five ways to bring the outside inside.

Buy a Plant

Get a plant that’s hard to kill like aloe, cacti, snake plants, or ZZ plants. If you’re feeling brave get a fiddle leaf fig, string of pearls, or a birds of paradise plant, which are more statement plants, but harder to take care of.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_zlT0SjLOR/

Light Candles

Find a soy candle that reminds you of nature like wood, floral, tree, or other earthy scents. Change the mood of any room by lighting it. Diffusers or essential oils will give you the same vibe.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3R9u8jhstC/

Decorate With Natural Patterns

Decorate your home with pillows, kitchen towels, blankets, and linens with patterns of the outdoors like leaves, flowers, palm trees, fruit, and vegetables.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BlA-d3PD76g/

Create a Terrarium

Fill glass containers with soil, moss, gravel, pretty rock, and plants to bring a slice of the outdoors into your home.

Tune Into Nature

Listen to a playlist of rainstorms, running water, rustling leaves, birds chirping, and ocean waves to bring the sounds of nature into your living space.

Trends come and go season after season and it’s time to review some of the most popular home design trends that are actually outdated in 2020. Sit back and read about the home design trends you need to forget about if you want to keep your home fashionable.

Masculine vs. Feminine Design

Interior magazines used to describe dark, moody designs as “masculine” and pastel, floral rooms as “feminine,” but we’re done with that. The whole society is reevaluating gender norms so it feels silly to keep describing interiors as meant for girls or boys in 2020.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B8-3khQJFC6/

Color Matching

Rules about certain colors not looking good together are definitely outdated in 2020. Feel free to mix black with navy or pink with red if that brings you joy. There’s no limit to color combinations that look good as long as you like them.

Picking One Style

Choosing a particular style for decorating your home and sticking to it can limit your creativity and there’s absolutely no need to do that anymore. It’s your home, so get anything that makes you feel good and enjoy your eclectic space!

We’ve just begun 2020 and it’s time to see which we’ll take with us into the new decade with us and which ones we’ll leave in the old one. When it comes to kitchen design trends, here are three that won’t be part of our lives anymore.

Marble

While marble pattern will still be here, actual marble countertops are just too impractical to stay. They can easily scratch and stain and don’t deal with heat very well. There’s no reason to go through all that trouble when you can get countertops in other materials that look like they’re made of marble.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3WrmS8JJuJ/?utm_source=ig_embed

All-White

It’s time we finally let go of the idea of an all-white kitchen. We’re not saying there’s something particularly wrong with them, but it’s a bit boring. Bold cabinets, warm colors, and a lot of texture are all exciting ideas for a kitchen makeover.

Industrial Lighting

Industrial style has had its moment in the 2010s, but now we’re ready to move on to something lighter and softer. The purpose of kitchen lights should be to light up the room, not to draw all the attention.

If you have an empty wall in your room but need extra storage, we have the perfect solution. These trendy designs will provide you with the best wall storage ever.

Geometrics

Add some geometric vibes to your wall by installing shelves and cupboards in awesome shapes. Even the simplest room will look times better, thanks to your amazing wall installations. And let’s not forget about the amount of storage you’ll get with this solution.

Fancy Upgrade

If your space is very modern, it definitely deserves a wall storage design such as this one. It is so contemporary and unique, that it will become the centerpiece in the room. When people first think of wall elements, they picture classic shelves for books. This shelve design with a twist can be used for so much more than books.

Cool Cupboards

Old-fashioned cupboards are making a comeback. They are perfect for storing all kinds of items, especially in your office and kitchen. Whenever you have an empty wall that you want to use, try out the amazing cupboards.

A Whole Wall Of Shelves

What better way to get extra wall storage than with a number of shelves? The best thing is that you don’t have to store only books, but also literally anything you can think of.

Light Candles

Find a soy candle that reminds you of nature like wood, floral, tree, or other earthy scents. Change the mood of any room by lighting it. Diffusers or essential oils will give you the same vibe.

Decorate With Natural Patterns

Decorate your home with pillows, kitchen towels, blankets, and linens with patterns of the outdoors like leaves, flowers, palm trees, fruit, and vegetables.
