Many of us are currently considering doing some home projects we never had time for. If you’re thinking of planting a herb garden so you can have fresh herbs for cooking, here are the first steps you should take.

Location

Picking the right location for your herb pots is one of the crucial things you need to do. Most herbs will thrive in full sun as long as the temperature doesn’t go above 90 degrees F in the summer. If you believe they will be too hot, plan to put the herbs somewhere where they can get morning and afternoon sun.

Soil

It’s important to prepare the soil for your new herbs. Use a garden fork to loosen it so water can drain better and plants can grow roots freely. Add some compost and mix it into the soil to help fertilize the plants and prevent drainage problems.

Containers

Pick the containers that have enough space for your plants to grow. If you can, plant the herbs outside in the ground, as they will love it even more. But don’t worry about it too much; herbs are pretty easy to grow and will soon provide you with some fresh leaves that will make your meals delicious!

Have you been doing a lot of cooking over the past few weeks? Many recipes call for herbs, but wouldn’t it be awesome if you could use fresh herbs you’ve grown yourself? These five herbs are perfect garnishes for your dishes and you don’t need a green thumb to grow them!

Chives

Chives are one of the easiest herbs to grow indoors as they don’t require much light. Top off your salads, soups, sandwiches, potatoes, and eggs with this herb prior to serving.

Mint

Peppermint thrives in shade, but make sure it gets a little bit of light. You can add it to your greek yogurt bowls, make some amazing tea, top off of a salad, or add it to your favorite cocktails.

Parsley

Parsely is probably the most commonly used herb and once it gets growing, it doesn’t require much maintenance. If you love Middle Eastern cuisine such as bulgar and grape leaves, parsley is a must.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_HbF6FArhN/

Oregano

Although it requires six to eight hours of sunlight a day, just place it by a well-lit window and it will thrive. Pizza, pasta, chicken, eggplant, potatoes, seafood—oregano goes with almost everything!

Basil

Basil is one of our favorite herbs, but it’s probably the most difficult to grow on this list, especially during the winter months. Now that summer is almost upon us, we’re ready to give it a go. Basil pairs great with olive oil, fruit, tomatoes, cheese, and garlic.

Fresh herbs seem to go bad really quickly so we researched the best ways to keep them in our pantry longer. Doing these things will help you get more out of your fresh herbs and prevent food waste, so let’s get to work.

Soft or Hard Herbs?

Herbs can generally be divided into soft and hard herbs, and knowing which ones you’re dealing with can help you a lot when it comes to preserving them. Soft herbs include mint, parsley, basil, etc., while hard herbs include oregano, rosemary, and thyme.

Washing and Drying

Carefully washing your herbs will remove bacteria and dirt and help prolong their shelf life, but only if you thoroughly dry them. Use a salad spinner to make sure all the excess water is out before storing them.

Soft Herbs

Soft herbs are best stored in a mason jar like this: gather them together like a bouquet of flowers, then trim the ends. Place the herbs in a jar filled with just enough water to cover the stems without touching the leaves. Seal the jar and keep in the fridge. Make sure to change the water every few days.

Hard Herbs

Hard herbs will remain fresh the longest if you keep them in a damp paper towel placed in a tightly sealed container you will keep in the fridge.
