No matter how small your garden, you can still create your own mini vegetable garden with a few tips from the experts.

Track the sun

Some crops like tomatoes and other fruiting crops need 6 to 8 hours of full sun a day, while others can thrive on 4 to 6 hours. If your garden can provide this, you’re in business. You can track the arc of the sun with the Sun Seeker app.

Use the vertical

If you have a fence or a trellis, or you can put one in, you can grow climbing veggies such as peas, beans, and cucumbers.

https://instagram.com/p/p4I55EgW4M/?utm_source=ig_embed

 Build your garden

  • Add compost and a few cups of fertilizer to beds.
  • Loosen and turn over soil, and rake smooth. Take out any large pieces of clay.
  • If you have an irrigation system, check it before you start planting.
  • Sow seeds at the recommended spacing on the packet. Mark with tags for identification.
  • Once seedlings develop, mulch around them to prevent weed growth and retain moisture. A 1-inch top dressing will be adequate.
  • Keep your garden weed-free, and water as necessary.
  • Investigate companion planting to avoid the use of pesticides.

Townhouse gardens are small enough to pose a challenge as to what design to follow. They range from long and narrow, too short and wide, but they’re all full of possibilities. Read on for some ideas for your small garden.

Go symmetrical

This Brooklyn townhouse garden is rectangular, so landscape designer Susan Welti of  Foras Studio created a stunning symmetrical garden for her clients. The best thing is that it’s low-maintenance.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BY5dzkPFn-B/?tagged=symmetricalgarden

Divide and conquer

This London garden has been divided into three different areas to create the illusion of space. Instead of being purely functional, the path is the focal point that invites you to walk through the garden.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bd0DWGchn8M/?tagged=gardenlayout

Keep the trees

If your garden has a tree in it, don’t cut it down. It can be a fabulous central focal point, as designers Niya Bascom and Anishka Clarke of Brooklyn-based Ishka Designs discovered with this huge Japanese maple tree that casts dense shade over a Crown Heights property.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BiSb5Zfh_ip/?tagged=townhousegarden

Keep it easy-maintenance

If you’ve got little time to devote to your garden, keep it simple and low-maintenance by planting drought-tolerant shrubs and mulching the beds with bark to prevent weed growth. All these Brooklyn garden needs is a quick sweep of the paving stones.

A retaining wall can form the wall of an outdoor room that will keep you sheltered from the elements. This one has a TV and bar, but you could create a games room or a lounge area in the same way.

Make a sunken patio

This inviting little patio used to be a crumbling mess before landscape designer Ryan Prange (fallingwaterslandscape.com) revamped it. He used a wooden screen and a creeping ficus to hide the broken wall, replanted and paved the floor, and built-in seating areas and a gas firepit.

Modernize a stairway

The entrance to this hill-side Oakland, CA house used to be lined with red brick. Now the charcoal concrete retaining walls completely modernize the entrance to the home.

 Use plants

This tall retaining wall has been planted with drought-resistant plants like lavender and kangaroo paws which add visual interest, but also prevent soil erosion. The plants form the perfect background for this outdoor lounge.

Don’t Rush To Throw Out Old Fitted Sheets! Here Are A Few Genius Ways You Can Upcycle Them. The fitted sheet has long been the most dreaded item of laundry to fold. Although this complicated bed sheet may have given you problems in the past, it has a few practical uses other than being placed on your mattress.

Put an extra fitted sheet to work with one of these useful tips — your old fitted sheets will definitely come in handy around your entire home!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BdjRB2zFKsu/?tagged=fittedsheet

Create An Effective Beach Blanket

Dying to lay out on the beach without getting covered in sand? Bring a fitted sheet to prevent mess while you bask in the sun. Turn a fitted sheet upside down and place coolers or beach bags around the corners to keep your space free of sand. This barrier will keep your area clean for hours on end!

Allow Your Pooch To Lounge Without Making A Mess

You would do anything for your furry friend — even at the expense of your furniture. Allowing your dog to sit on the couch can cause a lot of excess dander to accumulate, and using a fitted sheet can prevent this hairy situation.

Stretch a fitted sheet over your couch cushions and tuck the ends in around the edges of the sofa. This will allow your pets to relax without stressing you out about the furniture!

Protect Your Plant Beds From Frost

Tending to your garden beds can be stressful once the weather starts to get cold. Using a fitted sheet to cover them when the temperature dips overnight can keep them safe and warm. Stretch a spare fitted sheet over your garden bed to keep it from flying off overnight. Your plants will be frost-free in the morning.
