With all the baking you’ve been doing to occupy your time, you probably have a lot of leftovers that you don’t know what to do with. The last thing you want to do is to throw them out or for them to go stale, but where should you store them?

Counter

You can store most baked goods like brownies and cookies in airtight containers for up to five days at room temperate. Muffins, breads, and pastries will start to go stale after two to three days. To keep the items fresher longer, tuck a piece of bread inside the storage container to regulate moisture. Baked pies and cakes will stay fresh in a covered stand or keeper went they are wrapped in plastic wrap for two to three days.

Fridge

Baked goods don’t do well in the fridge as they dry out, so you’re better keeping them in the counter or in the freezer. Store desserts made with raw dairy and eggs like custards or cream pies in the fridge.

Freezer

When placed in airtight containers, cookies, brownies, muffins, and bread will keep well in the freezer. You can also store pre-rolled balls of unbaked cookie dough in the freezer. If you want to grab just one item, wrap the treats individually in plastic wrap, then aluminum foil, and when you’re ready to eat them, thaw them on the counter.

This spring is definitely not what we were expecting. The whole world is affected by the coronavirus pandemic and one of the things you need to think about right now is stocking your fridge and pantry with groceries that can last you longer than a few days. You’re probably aware that many things with a long shelf-life contain preservatives or are made in factories and therefore don’t have a great nutritional value, but there are still foods you can get that will give you all the nutrients you need without spoiling too fast.

Almonds

Almonds and other nuts are great for your overall health. They contain a lot of vitamin E and fiber and can last for up to a year in the fridge. Nut butter is good for 9 months when unopened and 3 months after opening.

Brown Rice

Unopened packages of brown rice can easily be stored for a year in the pantry and the period shortens to around six months once the package is open. Brown rice is a great base for a variety of dishes you can make.

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds can boost every breakfast you make and they can last for up to one year when stored in an airtight container.

Oats

Oats are a great choice for a quick and nutritious breakfast and you can store them for months in a cool, dry place.

Fresh herbs seem to go bad really quickly so we researched the best ways to keep them in our pantry longer. Doing these things will help you get more out of your fresh herbs and prevent food waste, so let’s get to work.

Soft or Hard Herbs?

Herbs can generally be divided into soft and hard herbs, and knowing which ones you’re dealing with can help you a lot when it comes to preserving them. Soft herbs include mint, parsley, basil, etc., while hard herbs include oregano, rosemary, and thyme.

Washing and Drying

Carefully washing your herbs will remove bacteria and dirt and help prolong their shelf life, but only if you thoroughly dry them. Use a salad spinner to make sure all the excess water is out before storing them.

Soft Herbs

Soft herbs are best stored in a mason jar like this: gather them together like a bouquet of flowers, then trim the ends. Place the herbs in a jar filled with just enough water to cover the stems without touching the leaves. Seal the jar and keep in the fridge. Make sure to change the water every few days.

Hard Herbs

Hard herbs will remain fresh the longest if you keep them in a damp paper towel placed in a tightly sealed container you will keep in the fridge.

A lot of people never consider the best places to store their foods. We all know that frozen foods go in the freezer, produce goes in the fridge, and non-perishables go in the pantry.

But, what if you found out you could store foods longer and stretch your dollar by putting them in the freezer? The freezer extends the shelf life of your favorite foods so they won’t go bad and get tossed in the trash, so next time you go shopping put these items into your freezer!

Nuts

Nuts have a very high fat content which means that at room temperature they can actually spoil quicker than you think. So, don’t put them in your pantry once you’re home from the store, chuck them straight into the freezer! This will help them last a whopping 2 years, and the best part is that when you want to enjoy one, you don’t have to defrost them, just eat them straight out of the freezer.

Butter

Butter is something that some people use every day and other people use it a few times a year. If you fall into the part latter, this trick is perfect for you. Put your butter into a freezer bag and it will last 1 year for salted butter, and 6 months for unsalted!

When it comes to food storage, you can really produce a lot of waste if you’re using disposable items. Instead, go the easy and zero-waste route with these tips!

https://www.instagram.com/p/ByN9SThhZ5_/

Beeswax

Beeswax is one of the newest products that you can use in order to cover your food securely without having to use plastic wrap. You can wrap anything from cut vegetables to bowls and plates, which is really convenient.

The best part is that you can wash them and you use them over and over again! The downfall is that you do have to buy them, which creates wastes in and of itself.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BxhyiUlB554/

Plates

The plate method of food storage is super underrated, and you can do it today if you choose. All you have to do is put a plate over the plate or bowl you have your food in, and put it in the fridge. This creates enough of a seal, and you can stack things on top of it! This is especially useful for things like pie crust that needs to be chilled.

Jars

Jars are another great method for food storage, especially for things like cut-up produce, loose greens, legumes, grains, and more! Plus, you probably already have them in your home which is extra zero-waste.

We tend to keep our fruits and veggies inside the fridge, in hopes they’ll last longer, but this storage hack can be counterproductive. Some of the foods you’re keeping inside actually don’t enjoy the cold temperature – including these five.

Tomatoes

If you don’t want your tomatoes to lose their rich taste, avoid putting them inside the fridge, because they’ll be stripped off the compounds that make them so delicious.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BzEI_euFIKA/

Potatoes

Potatoes should be kept in a cool and dark place, and the inside of a refrigerator is just too cold for them and it may negatively impact their taste.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BzFstE2JbuQ/

Onions

Uncut onions are better outside your fridge, since the humidity can turn them into a moldy and mushy mess.

Cucumbers

It’s a waste of space to refrigerate your cucumbers, since they don’t require the cold and can develop soft spots along the way.

Basil

Certain herbs, including basil, will reap no benefits from being putt inside the fridge. Place them in a water-filled glass to keep them nice and fresh.

If you are trying to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle, food storage can be a bit difficult. Some people grew up on plastic wrap and aluminum foil, so breaking that habit can seem impossible. Luckily, there are so many ways to keep your food fresh without having to use single-use items. Check out these handy food storage tips and make your house a little bit more green.

Glass

Whether you choose to use glass storage boxes or even just old jars, glass is a great vehicle for keeping foods fresh. The best thing about this method is that since it’s clear, you can see what you have inside them so nothing gets left behind.

Reusable Food Wraps

If you really want to continue wrapping your fruits and vegetables in some sort of material, try and use a beeswax fabric instead of plastic or aluminum! They are reusable, washable, and most companies make them compostable as well. They also come in really cute designs!

Pots and Pans

If you want to keep something in the pot or pan you cooked it in to reduce clean up and save time for reheating, just throw a plate on top of it and it’ll keep your food fresh in the fridge.
