As summer rolls in, many of us are eagerly awaiting trips to the beach to bask in the sun, dip our toes in the ocean, and collect beautiful seashells scattered along the shore. But have you ever thought of turning these beach treasures into stunning shell art? Here’s your guide for creating unique and enchanting shell art pieces.

Materials Needed:

  • Assorted seashells
  • A blank canvas or wooden board
  • Strong adhesive (hot glue gun works best)
  • Acrylic paints and brushes
  • Sand

Plan Your Design

Before you start gluing shells onto the canvas or wooden board, take some time to plan your design. You can opt for a simple and elegant pattern or create a more elaborate seascape scene featuring your collected shells.

Arrange and Glue

Once you’ve decided on your design, lay out the seashells on the canvas to visualize the arrangement. When you’re satisfied, start gluing them in place using a strong adhesive like a hot glue gun. Be careful while gluing to avoid burning yourself.

Add Sand

For an authentic touch, spread a thin layer of sand on the canvas to create a textured background. This will give your shell art a beachy, three-dimensional feel.

Get Creative With Paint

If you want to add more depth and color to your shell art, consider using acrylic paints to highlight certain shells or add a background to your seascape. Get creative with blues and greens to mimic the colors of the ocean, or use vibrant hues for a pop of summer.

Let it Dry

Allow your shell art to dry completely before hanging or displaying it. This step ensures that the shells are securely attached to the canvas.

Display Your Masterpiece

Now that your shell art is complete, proudly display it in your home! It’s the perfect way to showcase your beach adventures and add a touch of coastal charm to your living space. Hang it on a wall or prop it up on a shelf or mantel to let it bring joy and summer vibes to any room.

You don’t need a lot of space to have a garden—you can build your own in a glass jar. Terrariums are a terrific addition to any home, and are easy to create, making them wonderful gifts. Even the most hopeless of plant parents should be able to keep this succulent sanctuary alive.

Things You’ll Need:

• A glass jar or bowl
• Activated charcoal
• Small stones and pebbles
• Little plants
• Potting soil
• Gardening tools
• Any decorative items you want to include

Step #1

Clean out the bowl or jar and cover the bottom with a 1 ½ inch-thick layer of small stones or pebbles (this can be increased for a taller vessel). This will act as drainage for your terrarium.

Step #2

Add a very thin layer of activated charcoal to keep the water fresh and fight off any bacterial growth in your glass garden.

Step #3

Add a layer of potting soil deep enough for your plants to root into it. Around 2-2 ½ inches should do the trick.

Step #4

Start by planting your largest plant first. Remove the plant from its container and prune the roots before making a hole in the soil large enough for the plant’s roots to fit. Nestle the plant into the soil and repeat the process with your other plants. It’s easiest to work your way from the back to the front of your terrarium.

Step #5

Once your plants are sitting happy, add a final layer of pebbles and any decorative items you’d like to include. Place the completed terrarium in an area with bright, indirect sunlight, and lightly water the base every two weeks.

The Japanese art of origami has been transforming paper into exquisite creations since the 17th century. An even older practice, that is no less beautiful, is quilling.

Not as well known as its Japanese cousin, quilling is believed to have originated in Ancient Egypt. The art form involves rolling strips of paper to create unbelievable 3D designs.

Manuela Koosch is a quilling artist from Romania who has been practicing her craft since 2010. Her Instagram account, @paper_to_petal, has more than 22,000 followers.

Manuela’s discovery of quilling was accidental, as she was originally looking for an origami tutorial. Yet, the striking designs, so delicately crafted, stuck in her mind…

“Everything I know about this type of paper craft I learned from the internet,” she says.

Although any shape or form can be created through quilling, Manuela is inspired by the botanical world and uses her skills to make breathtaking flowers.

Patience is definitely required for this art form (as is good hand-eye coordination) but the practice can also be calming and therapeutic. Not to mention, incredibly imaginative.

“The quilling community is full of wonderful and incredibly talented people, and new ideas spread like fire. Today an artist invents a type of flower in Malaysia and the next day quillers around the world know how to make it!”

Nathalie Lete exuberates pure talent. An artist through and through, her work isn’t restricted to one medium but rather spans entire industries: from fashion to stationery, ceramics to toys. Indeed, her whole lifestyle seems to revolve around art as can clearly be seen from the many snippets she shares on Instagram.

Lete’s house (an overgrown dollhouse that she nurtures with her husband and daughter) is in and of itself a piece of art. “We like wood, the furniture of the 60s and 70s along with black, gold shades,” shared the artist in a recent interview with Amara, admitting that quarantine meant she could further tend to her home, decorating it as she pleased. This mainly meant painting her walls with blooming flowers.

“What I liked especially was the idea of [creating] your own world, kind of a nest, just filled with your own art,” she further shared in an interview with My Modern Met. “From wall paintings to the rugs, from the fabrics to the lamps and everyday dishes. The idea is that you can transform a simple place and furniture found on the street into something special and personal.”

Based in Paris, Lete draws inspiration from her mixed background and multicultural upbringing. Born in 1964 to a Chinese father and a German mother, her work is mainly influenced by folk art. Its naive quality means it can appeal to a wide audience – from children to adults.

“I’m inspired by nature, flowers, animals, insects… and also a lot by vintage toys…” notes Lete. “I also love textiles, folk art… all the applied art in fact. When I was a student, I once saw a book about the Bloomsbury Group (The Bloomsbury Group was an influential group of associated English writers, intellectuals, philosophers, and artists, including Virginia Woolf & E.M. Forester) and I fell in love with this atmosphere.”

Now that the sun is shining, we want to spend as much time outside as possible. Since it’s warm enough outside, you can bring you arts and craft projects to your backyard or patio and really connect with nature. These five crafts are great to do with your kids and you can use the finished products as home decor pieces.

Sun Printing

Head to the beach or the woods and collect pinecones, leaves, seashells, and feathers, so you can create sun printing artwork. Make sure it’s a sunny day and put all of your collections on a light-sensitive paper and wait for the light to pick up on the silhouettes.

Tie-Dying

Use vegetables, plants, and fruit to tie-dye your clothes and sheets or you can buy a tie-dye kit from the store. Tie-dye is super trendy right now and we don’t expect it to go out of style anytime soon.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CCvdSBBn814/

Kokedama Gardening

Gardening is a great way to reconnect with nature and this Japanese gardening technique wraps plants in moss instead of placing them in pots.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CDNVWlkJo_k/

Glass Art

If you love the colors of the ocean, head to the beach and collect sea glass for your next art project. There are tons of things you can create with it including jewelry, stepping stones for the garden, trays, or sculptures.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CC0LM1TlMYY/

Rock Art

Gather all of the rocks, stones, and pebbles from your garden and create cute saying or pictures on them with paint. When you finish, hide them on trails so other people can see your beautiful work.

Who doesn’t love making home-decor crafts, DIY birthday presents, or wall decorations? It’s always super satisfying when we see our finished products come to life. If you’re looking for some new craft ideas, these are the biggest trends of the coming year.

Eco-Friendly Crafts

It’s no surprise that crafts, like many other things, are becoming more sustainable. Upcycling items from thrift stores, recycling materials, and natural dyes are all ways to be more eco-friendly.

Art Therapy Activities

We’re not just talking about adult coloring books. Paint-by-numbers, an activity we remember doing in elementary school, has become more popular than ever before. It’s also super affordable because you can download coloring pages online. When you’re finished with your masterpiece you have a lovely piece of wall art.

Stained Glass Crafts

This craft adds a colorful burst of light to any room and they also make the perfect gifts. You can get stained glass mosaic kits that come with everything you need to complete your crafts. All you have to do is decide what pattern you want.
