Have you ever noticed that after a vacation, your skin looks better than ever? A sun-kissed tan can help even skin tone and we all know that rest and relaxation is the key to a youthful glow. If you are prone to acne, however, swimming in the ocean could be the reason your skin looks clearer than ever after going away.

Last week, Hailey Beiber shared a photo of the ocean on her Instagram story with the caption: “My skin is always best when I’ve spent time in the ocean.”

This got people wondering whether there really is a scientific reason why skin feels smoother and healthier after going for a swim. It turns out, there is.

“Ocean water contains high levels of salt, which has a drying and exfoliating effect on the skin,” Dr. Zeichner told Vogue. “There are anecdotal reports of ocean water clearing up skin conditions like acne. The salt helps remove excess oil from the skin to dry out pimples.”

He continued: “Sodium chloride, the main type of salt found in the ocean, also has antimicrobial properties, and may help lower levels of acne-causing bacteria on the skin.”

So next time your skin is feeling a little oily, skip the skincare products and head to the ocean.
