]]>There’s a common saying that we’re all our own harshest critics, and this can be extremely true. The problem is, when we’re too critical of ourselves, it can really stifle our creativity. The key is to turn off our critical side and just create without thinking. Later, you can reflect on your work and critique it appropriately.
Another thing that can be good is to be your own audience. Oftentimes as artists we worry so much about what our prospective audience wants. The problem is that we don’t really know what they want, and therefore it’s a lot better to try and impress ourselves with our art. This will create the best results.
Finally, it’s crucial to constantly be creating. The best way to create quality work is to exercise our creative muscles as though they’re muscles. This will strengthen our ability to optimize our creative flow, and in the process optimize our quality as well.

]]>It’s quite common for people to start feeling imposter syndrome at this point. You start to wonder how you could possibly ask someone else to pay you more money, even though getting paid is the primary reason you were looking for the job in the first place. You need to understand that you are providing a service for them, and this should instill confidence in yourself.
The second you see yourself as a valuable asset is the second you see the salary negotiation as merely transactional. You don’t have to worry about them not liking you as much as a result. They understand how it is because they’ve all been through the same process.
Now, that doesn’t mean that you should ask for a ridiculous salary that’s not within the frame of realistic expectations. It’s good to do your research and keep everything within realistic range, but at the same time you should be confident in yourself and not feel guilty for asking for more money. If they can give it to you, they will. If not, they’ll tell you!

]]>Newport argues in his book that while some people do have pre-existing passions, not everyone does. Furthermore, he states that it’s not enough to be “passionate” about something, because that in fact doesn’t guarantee happiness in one’s work, and it also doesn’t guarantee success.
Rather, Newport believes in the importance of building rare and valuable skills overtime, regardless if a person is passionate about it. He states that the more rare and valuable skills a person builds, the more they’ll be able to invest those skills into something called “career capital”, which can then enable a person to have more control and freedom in their career.
To paraphrase even further, Newport continues that one can actually grow to become passionate about a career as a result of building those rare and valuable skills—rather than the opposite approach of figuring out a pre-existing passion and following it blindly.

]]>If someone in the office has an issue with something or someone, and they feel comfortable venting to you, by all means listen to them. There’s no rule against that. But let your involvement end there, and don’t start becoming an active player in this drama tornado.
In order to avoid drama, you need to be able to predict things before they occur. If something happens that makes you uncomfortable, the best thing to do is to nip it in the bud before it becomes a bigger problem. This will render the issue solved before things get too awkward.
The best way to avoid drama is to treat your workplace like just that—a workplace. Focus on your professional tasks at hand and don’t allow yourself to get too sucked into whatever drama is going on.

]]>Just like all matters of life, how we conduct ourselves daily is very much influenced by how we were raised. Our personality was shaped and influenced in our formative years, and this actually currently impacts our spending habits—or lack thereof.
However, this isn’t intended to provide a dire outlook on your future financial endeavors. In fact, it’s merely meant to keep you aware of why you make certain decisions. It’s your life, and you can do whatever you want with it. But if you’re trying to make a change in your money habits and find it difficult to do so, it can be helpful to know where the problem is coming from.
For instance, if you often have trouble spending all the money you earn and not saving it, perhaps you should dig deeper and ask yourself why you like spending the money you do. This may be beyond your area of expertise—in some cases, a therapist can help—but simply making yourself aware of this fact is the first step towards making a responsible and real change in your financial life.

]]>Just like you follow your own work schedule like it’s your job, so too should you set the same schedule for yourself while working remotely. You should have set hours where you work on various things, and stick to those hours in a manner that’s ironclad and unchangeable. This will teach you how to discipline yourself.
This is a bit of a cop out, but it’s also something that not everyone considers. If you’re in an impractical situation, simply leave it and go somewhere else. Believe it or not, there are cafes you can go to that allow you to plug in your laptop and work to your heart’s desire, and this is a great option for you.

]]>When you tell someone a story, or something you learned, how would you feel if they just shrugged you off, or said something to the effect of, “Yeah I already know that.” You wouldn’t feel too great.
So when someone is telling you something that they clearly are passionate about, mirror their enthusiasm to make them feel good about themselves. Even if you don’t necessarily share the same interest, being a kind person is about supporting their passion regardless.
As mentioned before, it’s not fun when someone tells us that they “already knew that”. But here’s the thing. Sometimes we might think we already know something, and maybe we do. But when someone tells you something, you need to be a little bit humble in that moment and recognize that even if you think you know everything that they’re saying—there might actually be something new they’re adding to the table.
Sometimes we might know about 80% of something that our peer is talking about, and because we want to save face, we say that “we already knew all that.” But we don’t. We knew part of it, and now we just gained an extra 20%.
We need to set our pride aside and be keenly conscious of the new information we’re learning, even if it’s something small. We need to make the conscious effort to tell our peer that they’ve introduced new information to us. This will not only make you more humble, but it’ll also make them feel a lot better than if you were to just say, “Yeah, I already knew that.”

]]>There are those who love remote work, but others who absolutely despise it. Believe it or not, some people actually love getting out of their bed every day, getting dressed, and taking a commute to see people at an office. There’s something energy-inducing about being around other people every day, and it’s something you lose when you’re stuck at home being a hermit.
For this reason, companies shouldn’t just assume that everyone wants to work at home. Hybrid models are good because they accommodate everyone, but there are some workplaces that abandon the office altogether. Ultimately, an employee shouldn’t have to quit because they have trouble working from home, which is why all companies should recognize that remote work is truly not a one-size-fits-all solution.

]]>Let’s first talk about the reasons that you definitely should pursue a career in software engineering. First off, it’s a field that’s continuing to grow. Second of all, due to the rising demand for talented coders, it’s also a field that can be very lucrative as well. Third of all, it could be something that you grow to love for years to come.
However, there’s another side to this coin that you need to consider as well. The fact of the matter is, that learning to code well isn’t easy. It requires years and years of practice and experience before you can really get a hold of the software “language”, and you’ll be competing with millions of others who are also trying to learn it. Ultimately, the path will be a hard one, but if you think it’s worth the grind, then go for it!

]]>When we’re too close to something, we’re not thinking clearly. After hours, days, months, or even years of being unable to solve a particular matter, sometimes the reason is that we’re way too close to it. We’re so deeply entrenched in the problem that we’ve actually become the problem itself. Or, better put, we’ve mentally immersed ourselves into it.
But when you take a proper step back, everything changes. Taking a step back can be done in a multitude of ways, depending on the specific problem at hand. But it basically requires you to feel like you’re taking a break from it all. You need to stop thinking about it, and do whatever you can to forget about it for a considerable period of time. Once you’ve finished your break, you can then come back with a rejuvenated mind, body, and soul—and you’ll be 100 times more equipped to solve the issue.
