As individuals age, maintaining muscle tone and overall health becomes increasingly important. For those over 50 looking to strengthen and tone their arms without the need for weights, a new exercise routine featuring yoga postures offers a promising solution, according to El Universal.

Maintaining a regular exercise routine is necessary to counteract the effects of aging on muscles, they report. Over time, muscles become less toned and are less able to contract due to normal changes in muscle tissue and changes in the nervous system caused by aging, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Mexican Secretariat of Welfare indicates that physical exercise reinforces muscle strength and function, improving bone health and strength as well.

Crocodile Pose

For individuals over 50 years old, certain yoga postures can significantly improve overall well-being. One such posture is Makarasana, also called the Crocodile Pose. This exercise can be performed at home without the need for weights and helps tone arms and reduce flaccidity after the age of 60. The exercise routine allows individuals to strengthen and tone their arms completely, including the shoulders, with benefits noticeable in a short time.

To practice Makarasana, El Universal gives the following steps: Begin by sitting on your knees and extending your arms forward until they touch the mat. Then, slowly place your legs behind you and lower your abdomen, chest, and forehead towards the mat. Cross your arms in front of you to support your forehead and relax in this position. Maintain the position while focusing on stretching the spine and keeping a deep, calm breath. When finished, slowly return to a seated position, avoiding sudden movements. If comfortable, you can intensify the posture by slightly lifting the torso instead of fully resting the forehead on the mat. The routine can be intensified over time as one sees fit.

Makarasana not only relaxes the muscles but also has a direct impact on the respiratory system. By lying face down in Makarasana, the need for oxygen in the body decreases, relaxing both the respiratory and circulatory systems. This posture reduces muscle tension, offering overall relief throughout the body. It is especially beneficial for those seeking flexibility, stress relief, and better sleep quality.

Calming and Strengthening

Moreover, Makarasana is an effective tool for combating anxiety and insomnia. It helps calm the mind and nerves. Channeling attention towards the breath while in Makarasana promotes a state of deep relaxation. This makes it ideal for those seeking to improve sleep quality or reduce stress levels. Makarasana stimulates blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the tissues, and promotes greater mental clarity and a general sense of calm.

Although Makarasana is a restorative posture, it activates the core muscles, El Universal points out. It strengthens the abdominal muscles and lower back. With regular practice, Makarasana contributes to improved stability and abdominal health.

The objective of this exercise routine is not only to strengthen muscles but also to take care of overall health and provide well-being. The National Institute of Older Adults of Mexico emphasizes that active aging is the process of optimizing health and participation opportunities to improve quality of life as one ages.

The Mexican Secretariat of Welfare states that physical exercise is good for all parts of the body, including the mind, as it improves brain health and learning. Incorporating Makarasana into a regular exercise regime can help individuals over 60 transform their bodies, strengthen their arms, and enhance their overall well-being. With benefits ranging from improved muscle tone to reduced stress and better sleep quality, this yoga routine offers a holistic approach to health and fitness.

Maintaining radiant health is achieved with constant care, proper routines, and adequate nutrition. Healthy habits, including physical exercise and a balanced diet, are among the main recommendations that specialists propose to their patients of all ages. This reinforces the importance of exercising as a pathway to good health.

Yoga has taken off in the last few years as a great way to reduce stress and stay in shape. But did you know that certain yoga poses can also help your body know when it’s time to turn in, as well as improve your quality of sleep? Be sure to breathe deeply and hold each pose for a few minutes – using props like blankets and bolsters is a great way to make holding poses more comfortable and help yourself relax. Slow and steady wins when it comes to bedtime yoga.

Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend)

Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your knees slightly bent, then fold forward and hold opposite elbows or allow your hands to rest gently on the floor. Stay for about 10 breaths or until you feel you’ve received the benefits of the pose. When you’re ready, slowly roll up one vertebra at a time, bringing your head up last.

Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclined Bound Angle Pose)

Find a comfortable seat on your yoga mat. If you’re using a bolster, place it at the base of your spine with a rolled-up blanket at the other end for your head. Bend your knees and bring the soles of your feet together and let your knees fall to the floor. Recline and breathe, imagining yourself melting into your mat or bolster. After a few minutes, roll to one side and slowly sit up.

Viparita Karani (Legs Up The Wall)

Sit sideways as close to the wall as you’re able. Using your hands to keep you steady, lower yourself to lay on the floor and bring your legs up to rest on the wall so that your body is in an L-shaped position. Place your hands beside you on the floor or with one on your belly and one on your chest. Relax and remain for as long as you’re comfortable. The gentle inversion of this pose can improve circulation and lead to a calming sensation that’s sure to send you off to dreamland.

Yoga is a great way to stay in shape by toning your flexibility and strength. However, its focus on breathing and listening to your body also makes it an amazing tool for centering yourself when you feel tense or tired. We can’t always control where we are when we need a pick-me-up, so it’s useful to know some yoga moves that can be done anywhere.

Mountain Pose

As a foundational position for yoga learners, mountain pose (standing with arms by your sides) may seem simple. But, as Adriene of Yoga With Adriene tells us below, there’s more to it than meets the eye. To do it properly you must engage your whole body and completely control your breath.

Standing Twist

Another move you can do while standing up is a mindful twist. If you’re feeling anxious, turning back and forth at the rate of your breath and giving your arms a bit of freedom will help blow off some steam, especially if you close your eyes. If you have somewhere private to do this, you may feel more comfortable to really let go.

Chair Stretches

If you’re sitting at a desk most of the day, there is yoga you can do right in your chair that can give you an extra boost. You can even modify positions like cat-cow for sitting up.

We all know the feeling of being stuck at the gate in an airport, waiting for boarding to start. Maybe you already bought a snack or a souvenir from an airport shop, or maybe your flight is delayed and you have to hang out at the gate. Either way, you need something to occupy you while you sit there. Here are some activities to do while sitting at your gate.

Sketching

If you’ve got an artistic streak, take a little sketchpad and pencil on your next trip and use the time at the gate to sketch. It’s the perfect time to flex your creative muscle or to work on your technique by sketching your surroundings. When they call boarding you just quickly stash the pad in your bag or pocket and you’re ready to go.

Making Friends

If you’re a social butterfly, you can always strike up a conversation with your fellow passengers. If you’re at the same gate then you have the same destination, so you already have the perfect icebreaker. This is a great way to expand your horizons and practice approaching new people in a low-stakes setting.

Stretching

Once you get on the plane, you’ll have to stay seated for a long stretch of time. That can make you stiff and uncomfortable, so use your time at the gate to stretch out in preparation. You’ll be doing your body a favor by taking this chance to stand and move around before you board.

Yoga is by far one of the most popular wellness activities in the world, mostly because it has numerous health benefits, both physical and mental. Here are a few signs that you could benefit from practicing yoga even if you don’t really love it.

Stiff Muscles

Muscle pain and stiffness is a common problem that can be caused by inactivity, especially among people who work desk jobs. Yoga is one of the best activities for people who want to reduce muscle pain and improve their posture.

You Have Trouble Sleeping

It’s a well-known fact that people who are active during the day and exercise regularly have better sleep. Yoga is great for improving sleep quality because it’s a low-impact workout that you can easily do in bed before going to sleep.

Lack of Focus

Yoga is so much more than just physical exercise—it can be beneficial for improving mental health as well. Yoga is good for reducing stress and improving concentration, which means it’s perfect for people who are having trouble focusing.

With 2021 approaching quickly, it’s time to start planning your yoga retreat for the New Year. Costa Rica, the Central American country known for its surfing and eco-resorts has some of the best yoga retreats. These three should be on your list.

El Sabanero Eco-Retreat

Found just outside the town of Tamarindo, El Sabanero offers its visitors peaceful tropical gardens, ethically made bungalows, and plenty of yoga. Each year, yoga teachers from all over the world host retreats for a variety of different practices. The popular retreat here is the “Revitalize and Rejuvenate” retreat. It’s a six-day course that has two yoga practices a day, vegetarian meals, and time to sit back and relax.

Montezuma Yoga

This is one of the original yoga centers in Costa Rica and is situated in Montezuma at Hotel Los Mangos. Yoga teacher Dagmar Spremberg, created this oasis of calm. There are three main retreats to choose from: Yoga and Spanish, Yoga and Wellness, and Yoga and Surf. Each of the retreats has a daily yoga practice, along with an accompanying activity such as language learning, surfing, or meditation.

Vida Asana

If you want to head to the center of the country, then Vida Asana in San Jose is your best option. Yogis from around the world hold retreats here and there’s a big focus on surfing and yoga. The cottages are built to blend in with the jungle and there is beach access from the resort itself.

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced yoga student, going on a yoga retreat might prove to be a great holiday choice. Yoga retreats have become popular in the last couple of years because they offer a variety of benefits and here are some of them.

Connection with Nature

Most yoga retreats take place in beautiful, secluded destinations where you can enjoy and reconnect with nature. This is the perfect opportunity to finally escape from the city and your busy life while exploring new locations.

New Friendships

A big part of yoga retreats is socializing and meeting new people who also share your passion for yoga. You’ll get to meet a lot of interesting people and maybe even make some lifelong friends.

Improve Your Skills

The most obvious benefit of yoga retreats is that you’ll get to deepen your understanding of yoga and improve your skills. Attending yoga classes two or three times a week is not the same as practicing your yoga lifestyle all day long, so there’s definitely plenty of new skills to take home with you.

Hot Yoga might sound like a nightmare to first-timers. Working out in sauna-like temperatures?!? But there are actually many important full-body benefits to Hot Yoga that make it worth a sweaty trip to the studio and integrating into your fitness routine.

Hot Yoga incorporates different dynamic styles of yoga and meditation in a room heated to a temperature of anywhere between 90-104°F (33-40°C) and often set to a high percentage of humidity.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv4SENYF6VU/

The studio conditions along with the meditation and physical movements help increase flexibility while the muscles stay warm, improve cardiovascular health, release extra toxins through heavy sweating, enhance circulation for healthier skin, and helps reduce stress. This form of exercise promotes the balance of mind and body for an equal combination of stress relief and calorie burning.

Additionally, because Hot Yoga makes you stay in extended positions while holding your body weight, there are studies that show positive effects of increased bone density, especially among women. Hot Yoga nourishes both the body and soul, offering a complete wellness experience. It is recommended to stay properly hydrated and do your research.

In 2020, we’re all been spending more time at home than ever before. And for some of us, this new situation can be stressful and unpleasant. Yoga can be a great solution—practicing yoga can ease your life both on the physical level and on the mental and emotional levels.

The ability to release daily worries, get on the yoga mat and breathe, is a true gift. Regular yoga practice, of at least once or twice a week, can bring joy, feelings of inner peace, and tranquility into your live.

On the physical side, yoga allows you to correct quite a few different posture problems, strengthen your body muscles, and allow you to get rid of particularly annoying lower back pain once and for all. Precise yoga practice, under professional guidance, can strengthen and heal the body and calm the rebellious consciousness.

There are different types of yoga, and each one is suitable for a different type of activity, and can also be used as a solution to a different problem. Choose the type that suits you, makes you feel good at the end of the practice and makes you want to go back and practice again the next day.
