Staying active in the winter is quite a conundrum and even reaching the recommended 10,000 steps per day might seem impossible. If you’re struggling to hit this number once cold and gloomy days arrive, this brief guide will help you increase your daily step count in no time.

Step Out on a Nice Day

We don’t get too many sunny days in the winter, but you should put them to some good use once they come your way. Step outside every time it’s not too gloomy or rainy outside, or consider checking the weather forecast in advance so you could plan longer walks.

Indoor Walking

Walking indoors is not so hard when you have a big home and can make a lot of steps just walking around and doing chores. On the other hand, if you’re living in a small apartment, you’ll probably struggle to increase your step count, but you can always head to a local mall where you can cover more ground.

Give Treadmill a Chance

Treadmill walking is another great way to increase your daily step count this winter without walking outdoors. Most people use this gym essential for running, but speed walking is also an option, and you can easily push your step count to 10,000 if you give it a try.

Slow and steady often wins the race, yet it’s hard to break a sweat without high intensity. When feeling unmotivated in the cold weather, slower routines such as weight lifting take more time for a satisfying payoff. Here are some workouts that are sure to keep the heart rate up.

High intensity interval training (HIIT)

Most high-intensity interval training routines are around 20 to 25 minutes and utilize every moment of training to make for an intense workout. Choose 5 to 6 exercises to do for 30-45 seconds, in between 15-20 seconds of rest time, or opt for a guided routine. This routine from Beverly Cheng is perfect for all experience levels, whether done with or without weights

Dancing

Dance is a great way to burn calories and improve heart health for those prone to disliking exercise. Whether trying Zumba or other forms of high-intensity cardio, dancers are sure to have fun while getting a killer workout. Check out Popsugar’s series of various routines by cardio dance expert Nicole Sheen, such as the one below.

Running

Many struggle with running, but it’s one of the best ways to take advantage of the cold outdoors while getting in a great sweat. For those unaccustomed to a long-distance run, try a few rounds of thirty-second sprint intervals between push-ups or squats.

Bodyweight Strength Training

Getting strong is a difficult pursuit without access to a gym or weights, but we often forget how to use our own bodies as weight to lift. Bodyweight strength training routines can be done anywhere using just the human body while being as beneficial for muscles as lifting dumbbells or deadlifting.

During the winter, many people make excuses for skipping workouts. Whether it’s the weather, it gets dark earlier, or just be tired, working out in the winter takes some extra effort. But this time of year happens to be a great way to get exercise in. Instead of weight lifting, running, or cycling, head outside and enjoy these fun winter workouts. You’ll forget you’re actually exercising.

Cross-Country Skiing

Now that it’s snowing, don’t stay inside. Take advantage of nature’s beauty and hit the slopes. Skiing is physically demanding and it takes a lot of endurance.

Ice Skating

Ice skating is a hallmark of winter and it’s a great low-impact activity your whole family can enjoy. You’ll feel your legs and core working as your try to stabilize yourself while you skate around the rink.

Ice Hockey

If you like competition, grab some friends for a game of ice hockey. You’ll have a ton of fun while burning lots of calories.

Snowball Fights

We loved snowball fights as kids, so why wouldn’t we enjoy them as adults? While throwing snowball you’ll get an arm and core workout and while dodging them you’ll get a leg workout.

Pulling Sleds

Grab the rope of the sled and pull your kids across the snow for an amazing leg, core, and upper body workout.
