]]>True to its name, this protected site boasts one mammoth cave. It is actually the world’s longest known cave system, with more than 400 million miles underground that have been mapped. The park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve. Inside of the caves, you can find fossils and preserved ancient artifacts.
National parks are not exclusively nature and landscapes. Believe it or not, there is a conserved historical park dedicated entirely to jazz, located right in the middle of the French Quarter of New Orleans. Jazz is considered one of the few uniquely American art forms. The park tells the story of jazz—the history, the culture, and where we are today. The New Orleans Jazz Museum is a fascinating place to visit, and of course, there is always a variety of street performances to keep you entertained.
Inducted as a national park by FDR in 1936, this park was named after Thomas Sumter, an American hero during the American Revolution. The park offers various activities including shooting ranges, four different motorbike and ATV tracks, hunting, fishing, and more. There is even an abandoned train tunnel and tracks from the Civil War era.

]]>Located in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, Smith Island has been occupied since Native Americans came seasonally more than 12,000 years ago. Most of the current population of the island—which boasts around 200 permanent residents—are descendants of 17th-century settlers. The island is known for its seafood, particularly crabs and oysters. Rent bikes or kayaks and explore the island’s trails, beaches, and waterways, which are teeming with wildlife.
Lake Champlain spreads from the Canadian border with the U.S. down to form the border between New York and Vermont. The lake’s small island chain is relatively unknown outside of the immediate area but provides an idyllic location for those seeking a quiet getaway. There is plenty to see and do, including apple orchards, aquatics, and fishing. The islands also contain Alburgh Dunes State Park and the world’s oldest coral reef.
An isolated island in the middle of Lake Huron, this little-known destination is a blast from the past, boasting historic buildings and even horse-drawn carriages. For all of you dessert lovers out there, Mackinac Island is also home to a world-famous fudge.

]]>The nation’s capital might not have the most extensive metro line, but it’s the fastest in the country! That means that when you get around it won’t be super crowded and you probably won’t have to wait very long for a bus or train to come. The only drawback is that transit is pretty expensive, which is a bummer.
San Francisco has many different transit lines, including cable cars that run throughout the city, so you can not only get to the place you need to go, but do it in a really unique, historic way! There is also the BART train line which goes to neighboring cities and suburbs, as well as local city buses.
Surprisingly, Boston has one of the best transit systems in the country, even though it’s actually a pretty small city in population. The subway system called the T has quite a few underground lines as well as buses that also reach to all the neighboring college towns.
