]]>The first and most obvious way you can reduce your environmental impact is to buy less clothes. Generally speaking, we all buy more stuff than we actually need so think well before you spend more money on clothes.
One of the ways to become a sustainable consumer is to buy only high-quality clothes because they generally last longer and you’ll get to wear them more.
Thrift shopping has risen in popularity for good reason. Buying second-hand clothes is a great way to save money, find unique vintage pieces, and reduce environmental impact all at once. In case you still haven’t tried thrift shopping now is the perfect time to give it a chance.
There are plenty of slow fashion brands nowadays that are both sustainable and affordable so make sure to do some research and buy smart in the future.

]]>Hand washing garments will use less energy than firing up the washing machine. Using an eco-friendly detergent and cold water will ensure you’re doing everything you can for the environment. For the details, consult the care label on the clothing item. Once you determine what to use, you can simply wash your clothes in the sink filled with water or in a small plastic tub. Dissolve some detergent in the water and soak your clothes. Swish them around, rub gently, and let soak for a while.
Once this is done, simply rinse the garments with clean water and squeeze to get out the excess water. Hang or lay flat to dry, depending on what the care label says, and they will soon be ready to be worn again!

]]>Look at what you already own and try to make every piece count. Are there things that have been sitting in the back of your closet for months that you forget you had? Are there shirts you don’t love that could be repurposed into something more likely to wear?
If once you go through your wardrobe you find there are still things you need to add try to find those things second-hand. Thrifting isn’t just sustainable, it’s unusually inexpensive and can be a fun afternoon activity.
Still, if there are things you can’t find thrifting you can still take care to keep sustainability in mind. We don’t often think of what our clothes are made of and how those materials affect our planet. So focus on looking for natural fabrics that limit pollution such as organic cotton, linen, wool, and silk.
When we talk about sustainability we can’t stop at environmental sustainability. We also need to consider human rights. When purchasing new pieces try and dig into where the company produces their products and if their workers are given a fair wage and safe working conditions.

]]>Avoid clothes made of polyester as they will at one point end up endangering the nature or some form of life. Choose natural fabrics that can fully biodegrade once you’re done with them.
Avoid buying things you’ll only wear once. Fast fashion promotes items that are low in quality and designed to follow a particular trend that will be out of style quickly, so your new purchase will soon turn into trash.
Buying from a local designer or manufacturer is much more sustainable than buying from a fashion chain. Make that choice whenever you can and cherish your unique clothes for longer.

]]>The denim label holds sustainability at the center of its business model. The designs have zero impact on the environment by up-cycling recycled denim. Now, sustainable glamour-lovers can treat themselves to a crystal-embellished pair of jeans as part of the handmade E.L.V. Denim x Swarovski collection.
Like the denim, the crystals have also been up-cycled. Each crystal is individually made by hand and fixed onto the denim garments.
E.L.V. DENIM Founder, Anna Foster, said about the collaboration: “I truly admire Swarovski’s commitment to sustainable development.”
“Rather than downcycling their crystal they have used it as a positive resource, allowing brands such as myself to use them creatively, producing limited-edition capsule collections.”

]]>Ethical fashion is a sub-market that focuses on providing clothing and accessories designed, produced, and sold while taking under consideration a range of ethical issues like sustainable production, fair wages, and animal welfare. Another important aspect when looking into buying ethical fashion is the carbon footprint of your purchase.
The great thing about the designs available comes with a grain of salt. Since the materials and labor are more expensive, ethically-produced items are often more expensive than their non-ethical equivalents. The bright side of this is that they are of far superior quality and will last much longer than cheaper clothes, so in the long run you are not only ethical, you are a smart consumer.
One of the best ways to start buying ethically is to find brands recommended by your favorite fashion magazines and popular publications such as Marie Claire, Dazed, and Vogue. Once you get past your first few purchases you’ll know who your preferred brands are.
If you buy online, try and learn the sales schedule of the different websites and make your orders in a group, this will save you some money and minimize the impact on the environment.

]]>Slow fashion is meant to be thoughtful and intentional. It represents buying garments that will last for a long time, buying second-hand items, and repairing the damaged things instead of throwing them out. It’s the slowest, more difficult way, but the one that will help you end up with more quality and less quantity in your closet.
Until we start thinking about it, going for fast fashion seems like a logical choice. Many stores offer the latest trends at great prices, but there’s always the question of what’s happening in the background. Slow fashion is more eco-friendly and focused on local labor and materials. Fast fashion, on the other hand, uses cheap overseas labor and moves huge quantities of stuff across the planet in order to distribute them to all the stores.
You only need a little bit of research to find a few great slow fashion brands and start switching to this eco-friendly movement.

]]>Sustainable means many things; a company could use biodegradable fibers, reduce the amount of water they use or use recycled materials. Some companies are built to give opportunities to local communities, compensate their workers, and treat them ethically. All of these attributes are important when buying clothes. Sustainable fashion is a little more expensive, but it will make you think more about what you purchase and the impact it has on the environment.
Here are 5 sustainable eco-friendly fashion brands doing their part.

Peony uses recycled fishing nets and nylon waste to create its fabrics for their amazing swimwear.
The ReNew Cold Weather collection is made entirely out of recycled plastic bottles. In 2021 the company has pledged to have no new plastic in its entire supply chain.
Allbirds create shoes that are so comfortable and they are all made with sustainable materials like wool, eucalyptus trees, and even sugar cane.

]]>Banana Republic and Urban Outfitters already launched similar rental clothing services.
Over the past year, the fashion industry, particularly fast-fashion’s, impact on the environment has been drawing awareness. It can be hard to forgo fast-fashion because it’s so cheap and there is an unlimited amount of options. Recently, H&M has decided to try new ways of shopping smarter as they previously released their Conscious collection in which the clothing is made from sustainable materials like orange peels and pineapples.
The retailer plans to launch the trial rental service for three months before expanding to other locations. But, in order to benefit from the rental service, you have to be a member of H&M’s loyalty program.
“We have a huge belief in rental, but we still want to test and learn quite a lot and do tweaks and changes,” Daniel Claesson, H&M’s head of business development said.
