When you think of salads we’re sure the first thing that comes to mind is healthy. Unfortunately, this isn’t always true as it’s super easy to make salads unhealthy by adding just one thing – salad dressings. They’re loaded with sodium, sugar, and ingredients you probably can’t pronounce. Here are some alternatives to salad dressings that are still delicious.

Hummus

Hummus is one of those foods we don’t need an excuse to indulge in. If you love hummus as much as we do, you’ll be glad to hear that the chickpea-based condiment has a ton of protein and healthy carbs.

Avocado

Avocados are another food we already love and can’t get enough of. They are used as alternatives to butter in many baking recipes, so why not use them as an alternative to salad dressing? Just cut the avocado into small pieces and toss your salad, to make sure all of it gets some avocado on it. Try adding lemon for a nice twist.

Tahini

It’s no surprise that another Mediterranean-inspired ingredient made our list, after all, the Mediterranean diet is supposed to be one of the healthiest. This paste is made from ground sesame seeds and it will add a bit of creaminess to your salad.

Oil and Vinegar

You probably already have olive oil and balsamic vinegar in your pantry, so why not use them in your salad? It’s low in calories and it adds a nice sweet and savory combination that pairs well with a ton of different salads.

You might think that if you are eating salad, then you are doing it the healthy way. Unfortunately, we have grown so accustomed to unhealthy treats, we don’t even recognize them as being bad.

So if you want to lose a couple of pounds, you might want to steer clear of the following salad ingredients.

Deli meats – Adding a bit of protein to your salad is never a bad idea, but not when the meat is processed. Unlike chicken or turkey, deli meats are high in nitrates and sodium. These meats tend to make you overeat and dehydrates and can make you feel bloated.

Candied nuts – Need I say more? Just because they are nuts doesn’t mean that they are healthy. If it’s coated in sugar, the red lights in your head should be going off. If losing weight is your goal, then sugar is the last thing you want to ingest.

Pasta – It seems that the world of health is against anything that is tasty. Unfortunately, pasta is high in calories. Rather substitute your pasta with quinoa.

Creamy dressings – Although these dressings can be super tasty, they are also high in sugar and other preservatives.

Fried foods – It might not be French fries, but any veggie-based fried food also contains masses of calories. If you crave a bit of crunch and salt in your salad, go the nutty route (no sugar added of course).
