Are you curious about what you can do to be happier? Well, you’re not the only one. In fact, there’s an entire subfield of psychology that specifically studies human happiness. It’s called positive psychology and it has quite a few insights to offer about what we can do as individuals to be happier.

Take Care of Your Health

The studies don’t lie: people who have better health—get better sleep and exercise more—are also happier. So as lame as it may sound if you’re not sleeping and exercising enough, try starting there. You might be surprised how much of an impact it makes.

Meditate

Another thing you can do that will make a huge impact on your happiness is meditation. By teaching you to focus on the present moment instead of worrying about the future or obsessing over the past, meditation is a great tool for improving happiness.

Gratitude

One common fallacy we humans make is believing that we’ll be happy if we just obtain that thing we want: the job, the promotion, the partner, the salary, etc. But the truth is that as long as we’re always focused on getting the next thing, we’ll never be happy. What will really make us happy is being grateful for what we already have.

Feeling like an imposter is something many of us have experienced. It’s most common in the professional world, when you start feeling like you don’t belong at a certain place and that somebody will realize you’re “faking it” pretty soon. Of course, we realize that this feeling doesn’t represent reality, but it can be hard to be sure of that when you start feeling insecure and incompetent. Here’s how you can get past it.

Acknowledge Your Feelings

It’s important to acknowledge your feelings and identify why you’re feeling them. Sometimes it’s easy to recognize why you’re feeling like an imposter if you give yourself a chance. Talking to a person you trust is also a good idea.

Feelings are Not Facts

Once you’ve identified your feelings, it’s important to distinguish them from the facts. If you don’t do this, it’s easy to start believing the things you feel even though they may have nothing in common with reality.

Fight Back

Whenever you feel overwhelmed with self-doubt, take time to actively fight back. For every negative thought, come up with a positive one that proves you wrong. Remember those conscious thoughts and get back to them whenever you need some encouragement.

Bad posture isn’t only bad for your physical health, it can also ruin your mental health. Here’s why it’s important to not slump.

If we reminded you to check your posture at any moment during the day, how many times would you have to fix it? Probably most of the time and you’re not alone. Not sitting with both your feet on the floor, with your back against the seat, and with your shoulders relaxed has become completely normal, but it may be what’s ruining your mental health and wellbeing.

According to research done by the British Chiropractic Association, more people are experiencing back and neck pain now compared to five years ago. With four out of five people in the UK having a desk job, it’s not difficult to make the connection. This is especially clear when you consider that many of those desk jobs are done from the sofa, dining table, or bed, where it’s virtually impossible to keep the right posture.

But what about mental health? A study found that “upright participants reported higher self-esteem, more arousal, better mood, and lower fear, compared to slumped participants.” That’s enough to make us watch our posture more!

Given so many social media posts on the topic, you probably already know that you’re not the only one who doesn’t feel their best right now. The same feeling has probably been following you since the beginning of this year and there’s a good reason for it.

Have you heard of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs? Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist who created this theory of psychological health. According to him, your psychological health hand wellbeing is determined by fulfilling the groups of needs in priority.

View this post on Instagram

Where do you fall in the pyramid of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs? . Deficiency needs make up the first four levels of the pyramid.  For instance, if you lack water (Physiological Need) you will do what it takes to get it. The final level, self-actualization, is a growth need.  This level of achievement will come after you have fulfilled the other levels, working your way upwards, to your own needs and satisfaction. . . Remember, your growth process will meet you where you’re at as long as you’re willing to put in the effort. Each level doesn’t have to be fulfilled at 100%, only according to where needs are met. None of the levels work in a vacuum, although they all effect one another. And yes, it is possible to be in different stages of motivation or change to work on multiple levels at one time, but it will be more challenging, naturally impacting your emotional and mental health. For example, if you lose your job, it can be really hard to be the best spouse you can be because you are preoccupied with being unemployed (Safety Need). Likewise, if you are homeless (Physiological Need), it is extremely difficult to also work on the two uppermost levels – self-esteem and the desire to become the most one can be (Self-Actualization- opportunity to fulfill one’s potential). And again, when safety (preservation of life and sense of security) needs are not met, posttraumatic stress may occur. . . Recognize where you’re at in the pyramid and be cognizant of your innermost thoughts and emotions to avoid compromising your physical and mental health. . . One thing to note, more updated pyramids have added another top layer- “Self-transcendence”… or sense of meaning. Essentially. It’s how you make sense or meaning of the world and your framework. . . #maslows #maslowshierarchyofneeds #copingskills #mentalhealth #mentalwellness #mentalhealthday #psychotherapy #mentalhealthawareness #selfactualization #psychologists #growthmindset #mindfulness #psychotherapy #blackdoctors #mentalhealthmatters #blacktherapists #familycounseling #marriagecounseling #familytherapy #perspective #personaldevelopment #psychologist #mindfulnessmeditation #brainrewiring #brainhealth #LCSW #phd

The idea is that the lower parts of the pyramid need to be satisfied before you can move onto the next levels. For example, a person whose basic needs like food and water aren’t satisfied won’t think about esteem needs or self-actualization. 2020 has messed up many of our critical lower needs so it’s absolutely normal to feel shaken and insecure.

With everything that’s going on in the world right now, it’s understandable that your focus is back to some of the more basic needs. If you lost your job, you’re probably worrying about rent and food. If you’re isolated, your social needs aren’t met. Don’t be so hard on yourself and accept that this may not be the best time to strive for fulfillment and having the job of your dreams. Taking care of your basic needs should be a priority right now.

The beginning of fall brings that cozy feeling that can’t be recreated at any other time of year. In the U.S., as well as many other countries, fall is the perfect mix of coziness and nostalgia and there’s a psychological reason we love it so much.

As Amy Jane Griffiths, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist and Chapman University professor told Bustle, “we all crave the comfort and security that comes with traditions and predictability. They may relate to joyful experiences with friends and family and provide something to look forward to.” By this, she means things like holidays, going back to school, or other seasonal events.

Colder weather is biologically motivating people to seek warmth and comfort. The fall weather is a perfect balance between cold (but not too cold) and comfortable, especially after a long, hot summer.

This is, of course, not true for all people and largely depends on individual experiences. There are plenty of people who get seasonal affective disorder and experience depression over fall and winter. They don’t enjoy the fall holidays, because they remind them of something that bothers them.

What’s your opinion on fall? Are you among those who can’t wait for it to get or would you rather sleep through fall and winter and wake up to the warmth of spring?

Our habits make our days and therefore our lives, and if we’re not careful about which habits we allow ourselves, some can affect us in a negative way. Breaking bad habits is not too difficult if you have the right tools. Here are three ways that always work.

Awareness

You may not even be aware that you have a bad habit. If you’re constantly telling yourself that you don’t spend that much time on social media daily or don’t drink too much soda, it’s time to start writing down your actions so you can know for sure. Simply start keeping track of the habit you don’t like without judging yourself and pretty soon you’ll be able to tell how bad it is.

Find the Trigger

There’s something that triggers every habit and you need to find the trigger for the specific bad habit. Do you always light a cigarette after a meal? Identify that as a trigger and find a replacement—for example, drink a glass of water after every meal.

Avoid Spiraling

It’s okay if you don’t succeed on your first try, just don’t spiral into more bad habits and completely give up. Allow yourself the opportunity to fail and start over as many times as needed. Every new day and every new hour is a new chance to do something good for yourself, but you need to give yourself permission first.

Your mind is an incredible thing. It can help you achieve so much in your life but it can also sabotage you in ways you never predicted. Here are 3 wrong beliefs many of us have that are making you feel bad for no reason.

Happiness is Limited

If you believe that happiness is a limited thing that you can’t get plenty of, you constantly create situations to prove this to yourself. Your anxiety increases and you feel worried every time something nice happens because you believe that it should be balanced out with something bad.

Always Reaching for More

When you constantly move on to next, bigger goals, you tend to forget about all the things you’ve already achieved. Always striving for more can make you feel bad and unaccomplished when in reality you have so much to be grateful for. Goals are good, just remember where you came from and how far you already got.

Thinking Everyone’s Judging You

If you feel like people are constantly looking at you and judging you wherever you go, just remember that other people probably do the same thing! When everyone is busy thinking about themselves, nobody’s really paying close attention to other people and realizing this can be very liberating.

You’ve probably had situations when intuition saved you from something really bad. That feeling in your gut that something is a good or a bad idea is something many of us know, but how do we work on it so it becomes a part of our daily lives?

Intuition is defined as the ability to know something without using conscious reasoning. You just know it without thinking about it when you learned it! People are born with intuition, but not everyone uses its maximum potential.

How do you develop it?‌

The more you learn, the better your intuition will be. It grows when you’re coming with rational arguments and thinking with your head instead of just believing something you’ve heard. Question everything and make your brain work hard on explaining why something is the way it is, and you’ll be able to make better decisions intuitively in the future.

The more we learn, work, and develop, the more we’ll understand the importance of intuition and let it into our lives.

Procrastination is often considered a bad thing that prevents you from doing everything you should be doing. People who procrastinate are called lazy, disorganized, or unmotivated, but that’s not always true. In fact, we have reasons to believe that procrastination might even be a good thing sometimes.

If you’re among people who always leave the important things for the last minute, you’re probably familiar with procrastination. But why do you do it? Is there something in this process of putting off the important work that can actually be seen as useful?

Focus

When you’ve reached the deadline, you don’t have time to overthink and overanalyze the work – you have to sit down and do it. That’s why we believe procrastination is good for practicing focus.

Efficiency

You know how you don’t think you’re going to have enough time to finish the project and somehow you manage to do it anyway? That’s because you become more efficient when you don’t have time to put things off anymore.

Fighting Perfectionism

Perfectionism is one of those things that seems positive on the surface but can actually be paralyzing and prevent you from achieving something meaningful. If you spend a lot of your time procrastinating, you definitely won’t have time for focusing on perfectionism.

Having a daily routine is important if you want to stay on track with working toward your goals and lead a more productive life. But do you know how important it is to change up the routine every now and then? As important as it is to have it, it’s crucial to review it after some time and change it up a bit.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B0IV8qXhpwP/

Why is this so critical? Because introducing new things and activities into your life brings you new value and opens up new possibilities. Whether the new things come from new goals you’ve set or from the desire to lead a more interesting life, they are typically good for you. Here are some great examples:

  • Try new food, go to a new restaurant, try a new recipe.
  • Change your personal style, get new clothes, change the hairstyle or color.
  • Try a new exercise regimen, a new hobby, change something in the living space – buy new furniture or move it around.
  • Travel to a new place, meet new people, go to places you’ve never been to before.
  • If you’re always in your car, walk more; change the usual route to and from work, introduce a new after-work activity.

Doing all this will help you be an interesting person and lead an interesting life, which will further help you develop into who you want to be.
