If you’re on vacation or perhaps in the middle of a special event, then taking a selfie is an ideal way to take a snapshot on the go without much planning. But while it may seem simple, there are some very specific steps that you need to take to ensure that your selfie comes out perfectly. Here are some tips to help you master selfies.

Use The Light

Whether you’re outside in the midday sun or indoors in a lit room, always make sure that the source of light is in front of you, not behind. By facing the light source, you’ll have a well-lit picture that highlights its focal point – you.

Don’t Use The Flash

Often, the flash can cause red eye and even make the background of the photo more dull. Consider using a selfie light ring instead.

Look Natural

No matter what angle or lighting you use, it’s important to smile naturally or at least show a natural facial expression in your selfie. Without this, no special effects in the world will provide you with the perfect look.

Before the lockdown, taking selfies for Instagram wasn’t too difficult. All you needed was to find a nice location, strike a pose, and set the timer on your phone. People got creative with various locations and props, and most tried to make it look like their photos are absolutely spontaneous, like they’re not even aware of the camera. Things are a bit different now so here are our best tips for taking selfies in 2020.

Clean Your Mirror

We’re assuming most of your 2020 selfies are happening at home. The mirror can be your friend, but make sure it’s super clean! Even though it looks okay, do a few test photos just in case.

Set the Lights

The best way to take amazing selfies is to have windows and natural light in your room, but if that’s not possible, use a good lighting source and be wary of the shadows it creates.

Watch the Background

All your hard work can go to waste if you forget to close the bathroom door behind you! Make sure your room isn’t a mess and that nobody will do something weird while you’re taking a photo. Take selfies against your favorite wall or create a dynamic background with the items you want to be seen.

Instagram has been around for eight years and, during that time, it became a unique platform for sharing photos and videos. Today, it comes with its own set of ‘rules’ that are not always clear to those who don’t have experience in taking perfect Instagram photos. Here are a few helpful tips so you can get better at this.

Pick a Theme for Your Profile

You don’t have to stick to only one theme but think about your interests and things you’d want to have on your profile – is it books, makeup, nature, interior, food, travel etc.

Keyword: Flat Lay

The Instagram community loves ‘flat lay’ photos – photos you take from above. The composition is crucial here.

Don’t Use Instagram’s Camera

The camera within the app is far worse than the original camera on your phone, so keep that in mind.

Editing Apps

If you’re frustrated that Instagram filters aren’t giving you the effect you want, it’s time to try some other editing apps. The most popular are Adobe Lightroom CC, VSCO Cam, and Snapseed.

Most of us have been embarrassed at some point due to a stupid pose. Not all of us are natural models, yet there some tricks that you can master to ensure that you never have a red-faced photo moment again.

Use your tongue

Everybody is afraid of the dreaded double-chin. After a long and inactive winter, you might have packed on a couple and this usually shows in your face.

Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth when you smile. It causes your jaw to tighten and makes the double chin disappear.

Tilt

When you face a camera head-on, it creates no shadow. This makes your face look wider and larger.

Instead, tilt your head slightly up or down and look slightly above your usual line of sight. This causes some shadows to ‘fool’ the camera.

Cross your ankles

If you’re facing a camera head-on, cross your legs at the calf. This stance makes your legs look longer and your hips narrower.

Learn to smile

Let’s be honest, smiling in front of a camera can feel awkward. It is not something that comes naturally to most people.

If you smile too big, you end up looking dorky, no smile at all and you look depressed and broody. Practice the relaxed smile when no camera is on you.
