Ask yourself this: when was the last time you sat down and wrote something (anything!) by hand? Now try recalling the last time you received a carefully written note or a handwritten, mail delivered, letter. It might not be intuitive these days to take a step back from the keyboard or phone, but the benefits of letter writing shouldn’t be overlooked! In fact, numerous studies have shown that handwriting letters and notes enhance cognition, creativity, and even social skills.

It can also be an aesthetic activity. Writing a letter using unique stationery and carefully chosen writing tools, makes for a better, more personal, experience. Sleepy Bee Studio might just inspire you to put pen to paper. Based in Cambridge, UK, the independent stationery brand offers premium stationery and delicate paper gifts.

The brainchild of husband and wife duo Gavin and Charlie, the brand also promotes sustainability, will all of their printed material manufactured by a UK company certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), an international organization dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. They also make sure their products are wrapped in tissue rather than plastic and are delivered using a recycled hard-back envelope or a recyclable cardboard box, meaning no further waste is produced.

The stationery has been designed based on a theme, with the first four themes inspired by the city of Cambridge, where the duo’s studio is located. One particular product they offer which caught our attention is their line of Flexible Sealing Wax. Created using a combination of real wax and resin, it adds a regal touch to any envelope.

In an interview with the Printed blog, Charlie touched on her sources of inspiration, explaining that the list is endless. “I have got so many lists of ideas in notebooks and on my phone. It’s tricky to keep up,” she relayed. “As I’m working from home now, I’ll be working but also thinking about the next thing I’d like to do. Gav usually gets these ideas shot at him in very quick succession the second he walks through the door!”

Lots of practices and hobbies from days past have seen a revival as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, from baking bread at home to roller skating for exercise. This is a case for reviving one more art form from yonder year: letter writing.

Sure, we may be in constant forms of communication these days from video to texts to phone calls to social media. But nonetheless, receiving a handwritten letter in the mail remains an incredibly special experience, one that is personal and tactile and surprising and delightful.

Sitting down to write somebody a letter requires you to be thoughtful and slow down, pause, and think about what you really want to say to a person. It’s an exercise in mindfulness, and you may find that what you write is different from the kind of thing you’d say in a text or an Instagram DM.

Plus, receiving mail is sure to feel incredible, especially when it’s not a bill. And when all is said and done, you’ll have a record of correspondence that you can look back on in the future when you reminisce about the crazy time that was the 20s.

We all remember the excitement we’d get when we’d check the mailbox and there was a letter waiting there for us. But, recently handwritten letters have become a thing of the past, a sort of lost art. Any letter, thank you note, or birthday card can be sent via email or text, and while that’s awesome, we miss getting handwritten letters. With handwritten letters, there’s a sort of personal touch to them as you pick the paper, the color ink of the pen, the envelope, and the postage stamp. Here’s why you should start writing letters.

They’re Personal

With technology, it takes a couple of seconds to send an email or message, but there’s something intimate about opening a hand-addressed letter and reading the note inside.

Relieves Stress

Writing letters can help you relieve stress and it’s calming. With all the time you spend staring at your screen typing away, it’s important to have creative outlets. They also let you momentarily slow down and the reader spends more time looking at a handwritten note because they can’t simply skim the screen.

Build Connections

There’s something more personal about handwritten letters as they take more time to write and they’re more thoughtful than simply sending an email.

More Value Than Digital Letters

Handwritten letters have physical and emotional value as you can hold them, smell them, frame them, and store them. Since they’re unexpected, they’re associated with receiving a gift, which is more meaningful.

Writing letters to people might seem like an archaic practice, but in reality, it is often necessarily and really just a kind thing to do. Whether you are sending a thank you note, a condolence card, or just a letter to a friend, making your own stationery is a great way to be personal and make something your own. Buying personalized stationery can be super expensive and it really isn’t necessary when you can do it yourself! So give it a try!

Envelopes

A great way to personalize your envelopes without going too over the top is by buying sealing wax! This is the stuff that people used to seal envelopes with before they had the adhesive to close themselves but now it is just a nice decorative way to seal your envelopes in a special way! There are all sorts of designs for the seal design you can choose to make it your own.

Cards

A fun way to personalize letters and cards is by gluing little pictures or drawings onto existing cards to create something completely new. You can make it more individual by personalizing to the person who is receiving the card, ie. pictures of them or you two together, their favorite things, etc.
