Toilet habits are not exactly dinner table conversation, but it makes it a whole lot more relatable when you realize that everybody poops. E-ve-ry-body. Although for some, doing a number two can be a bit of a struggle. If you’re often plagued by constipation (or are looking to avoid it), we’re here to help. 

Fiber is Your Friend

Your bestie of 10 years may hold a special place in your heart, but fiber has a special place in your gut. It is literally what helps stool move through your digestive tract easily. So load up on fruits, veggies, whole grains, and legumes. If you want extra fighting power, include natural laxatives like prunes, psyllium husk, and flaxseed.

Stress Sucks

No one enjoys stress. Particularly not your bowels. Experiencing angst can quite literally cause the muscles in your system to tense up, making it difficult to go. Do some breathing techniques, practice a little meditation, and try to release as much stress as you can. 

Hydration Station

When you are not properly hydrated, your poop can turn into a rock monster. Make sure you’re getting enough H2O throughout the day. Some people claim that coffee makes them feel movement below, but this is definitely not a replacement for water.

Sauerkraut is a probiotic filled side dish that is essential for any cookout. Making your own at home is super easy, incredibly cheap, and will keep your gut nice and healthy.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds of cabbage
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of  kosher salt
  • optional additions: 1 tablespoon of whatever seeds you like (caraway seeds, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Chop the cabbage into pieces and put it into a big bowl.
  2. Sprinkle over 1 1/2 tablespoons of kosher salt and start mixing it into the cabbage. Continue to do so every 30 minutes or so for 2 hours.
  3. Before the last time you mix it, add any additional spices you desire.
  4. Pack the cabbage into a sterilized jar and make sure you push it down as much as you can, with your hands or a tool.
  5. Finally, top it with the water that’s been extracted leaving an inch of headspace, cover the mouth of the jar with a cheesecloth, and screw on the top.
  6. Open the lid to burp it once a day, and leave it to ferment in a dark and warm space for at least 3 days up to 2 weeks.

If you’re someone who gets 8 hours of sleep but still feels tired all of the time, chances are you are frustrated and confused. You may be surprised to find out that feeling fatigued may have nothing to with the amount or quality of sleep you’re getting; it may be your gut that’s affecting your sleep.

When your gut isn’t running properly or doesn’t have a diverse amount of microbes, your body can suffer. This is because your gut is the center for your body; it’s the place where your food gets digested and the nutrients from the foods you eat are absorbed. But when your gut isn’t at it’s best, those nutrients can’t be absorbed, which causes your immune system and other systems to not work properly.
