Did you know that the fashion and beauty industry is also responsible for the huge amounts of plastic found in our environment? Plastic is everywhere; not just in plastic bottles and grocery bags. There are a ton of everyday beauty and fashion items that contain loads of plastic and these are the ones you should be aware of.

Sheet Masks

It’s not just the sheet masks that are problematic for the environment, it’s how they are packaged. Not only are the masks made from nylon or polyester, but the packaging also contains plastic and aluminum. Try switching to ones made from biodegradable materials like bamboo sheets.

Sequins

Although sequins used to be made from metal, they are now made out of PVC, which is nonbiodegradable. There are some companies that are starting to make sequins from recycled plastic, but these are the exceptions. Instead of buying a new sequin top, opt for one that’s metallic. You’ll still get the same look and it won’t be as itchy!

Face Wipes

Face wipes are usually made from polyester and they end up on beaches and in oceans. Avoid flushing them down the toilet and when it’s possible, use biodegradable ones or reusable cotton pads.

Picking up trash has been one of the most basic things you can do for the environment forever. Everyone knows that you shouldn’t litter and if you see trash you should try to pick it up. But, is it really worth your time and energy?

The answer is yes for a multitude of reasons, so don’t be afraid of trash because it can really help the earth!

Sewage Drains

A lot of people talk about how it’s important to pick up trash on the beach, which is completely valid because the trash can so easily get swept up by a wave or simply carried into the ocean or sea.

But, even if you don’t live on the coast, your sewage drain probably leads to a body of water that could easily get polluted by trash, so continue picking up trash inland as well!

Animals

Animals on sea and land are at risk of getting caught in or consuming trash, especially plastic. Animals can’t tell the difference between trash and food, and it’s really dangerous to have it around them. Make sure that you’re picking up trash so you can avoid them getting in trouble, and if you see birds or other animals trying to eat trash, shoo them away from the danger.

If you are someone who is concerned about the environment, it can be difficult to justify traveling in a plane because it is so harmful to the earth. But, sometimes you just have to fly somewhere and there’s no other solution. Even though you have to fly, it doesn’t mean you can’t offset your carbon dioxide emissions! Here are some easy things you can do to help.

Busy Flights

Although it is nice to get a flight where you have the whole row to yourself, it is actually better for the environment if the airplane is packed. This is because if more people are being transported it is more efficient to use the same amount of fuel. You can do this by taking a cheaper airline as more people will probably gravitate to the cheaper price.

Plant a Tree

A lot of airlines or other companies give you the option to plant trees in order to offset your carbon emissions. This is helpful because trees clean the air for us, and with so much deforestation happening, we need more trees now more than ever.

Reusable Products

If you are on a plane, say no to single-use types of plastic, such as the cups and food ware that you might get offered.

A new study reveals an interesting and unexpected link between climate change and the fashion industry.

Titled “A New Textiles Economy: Redesigning Fashion’s Future,” the report details just how damaging our current fashion industry is, and what might happen by 2050 if something doesn’t change fast.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BcpnlqDgJVw/?hl=en&taken-by=spotter.frankfurt

The Impact

The report showed that currently, 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gases are created every year by the fashion industry. Half a million tons of plastic microfibers are also currently being thrown into the sea every year by the fashion industry, adding to the impact.

This scale of pollution outsizes the impact from even the airline industry by a large margin. From your favorite pair of sneakers to that new top you like, the fashion industry is hurting the planet a lot more than people previously realized. If nothing changes, the fashion business may end up doing twice as much damage to the environment.

The head of the study, Ellan MacArthur writes, “The textile industry relies mostly on non-renewable resources…The current wasteful, linear system is the root cause of this massive and ever-expanding pressure on resources.”

How Can We Fix The Problem?

Scientists say there are many ways the current industry can solve this problem. For starters, all of the competing brands could work together to lessen their global impact. The report states that efforts are already being made to change the way the industry works drastically.

However, MacArthur also mentions that while the industry has made many great steps forward, it is still a long way off from changing entirely. MacArthur writes, “…a new textiles economy will demand unprecedented levels of alignment on the case for change, and collaboration.”

What Do We Do Now?

Famed fashion designer Stella McCartney has been one of the first to cooperate with MacArthur to reshape the industry. She released a statement to the press mentioning how hopeful she is that the report will open the eyes of other fashion designers, and lead the industry to a more sustainable future. Stella stated that the report could, “…allow us to find a way to work together to better our industry, for the future of fashion and for the future of the planet.”
