]]>Before you begin, ensure you have the right tools for the job. You’ll need a sharpening stone or whetstone, honing steel, and a kitchen towel.
Place your sharpening stone on a flat and stable surface. Some stones may require soaking in water before use, so read the manufacturer’s instructions to determine if this step is necessary.
Hold your knife at a consistent angle while sharpening. A 20-degree angle is a common starting point for most kitchen knives. You can use a sharpening guide or simply practice maintaining the angle by eye.
With the blade edge facing away from you, place the knife’s heel on the sharpening stone. Applying gentle pressure, slide the knife towards you in a smooth and controlled motion, maintaining the angle. Repeat this motion on both sides of the blade, alternating after each stroke.
After sharpening, use a honing steel to align the edge of the knife. Hold the honing steel vertically with the tip resting on a cutting board. Gradually slide the blade down the steel in a semi-circular motion, keeping the edge in contact with the steel at all times. Repeat this process on both sides of the blade.
To check if your knife is sharp enough, gently run the blade over a piece of paper. A sharp knife should slice through the paper with ease, leaving a clean cut. Once you’re satisfied with the sharpness, clean the knife under running water to remove any metal shavings. Dry it thoroughly with a kitchen towel and store it safely in a knife block or on a magnetic strip.

]]>Who doesn’t love a glass of wine after a hard day’s work? But what do you do with the wine bottle when it’s empty? You put it in the trash, of course. But why not save them to paint and use them as vases? We’re sure there has been a time you received flowers and had nowhere to put them. Well, with your beautifully decorated wine bottles you will always have a place.
All you need is a piece of wood and some macrame cord and a drill if you want to secure it to the wall. You can choose any wood you want and color. Make four small holes with a drill on each corner and then thread through the string, connect it to a macrame ring, and then put it onto a hook in the wall. Add some pretty plants or small books.
We all have those CDs sitting in our living room collecting dust, so instead of throwing them away, why not cover them in fabric or paint them and make them coasters for your drinks? Add some stones, make them glossy or matt, whatever your design choice is, make it fun!
What can you do with all that leftover fabric you have from costumes you once made? Why not cover your plant pots with it? All you need is some plain plant pots, fabric, and mod podge and you will have a fantastic fabric-covered plant pot to brighten up your home.

]]>Well, you can also choose a completely ordinary-looking one, but an interesting shape can add that little extra touch of uniqueness. Anyway, just choose a sweet potato, and you’re all set for step two.
Place all four toothpicks at the same height, which should be somewhere mid-sweet potato. The toothpicks should be inserted deep enough as to not slip out, but so that most of the toothpick still sticks out (roughly 70% of it should be visible).
Any empty flowerpot, vase, or even well-washed sugar jar would do. The only important thing is for the opening to be small enough for the toothpicks to be able to hang on the sides of it, keeping your precious sweet potato from sinking in. Use empty rice and coffee jars as vases and get some recycling done in the process.
Fill the vessel of your choice with water, then place the sweet potato inside.
Make sure you replace the water every 3-4 days, and soon (like, really soon, those little orange things are quicker to grow than you’d think) you’ll be seeing roots starting to pop out of the bottom half. Not long after, small branches will follow suit; and finally, green, heart-shaped leaves will appear.
