]]> Nowadays, there is so much information out there about food and cooking, that a lot of people believe cookbooks should become obsolete. However, no matter how much information the internet might have to offer, nothing can replace a real cookbook.

Cookbooks have been changing in the last decade or so into much more than your grandmother’s cookbooks, so here are some reasons to keep the traditions alive.

Stories

If you open up a recent cookbook, chances are that you won’t just find pages of recipes. Sure, they might be in there too, but alongside them are pages of stories or essays that give the reason why the author even created the book in the first place. These stories challenge and inform the reader’s ideas about the cuisine the author is referencing, which is so important in a time where food knowledge can start to run together.

Voice

Cookbooks give a voice to people that may not be heard otherwise. People from ostracized or minority groups who don’t hold power in society become powerful by using food as a tool. Food goes so much beyond eating, and allowing someone who has a real connection to the food tell the audience what they want them to know, is really powerful and inspiring.

Although there are so many differences between cultures, one thing is almost certainly the same; tea. Almost every culture has a tea that is native to the land or for religious purposes, so it can be very enlightening and delicious to discover all the teas you can!

Morroco

When you’re in Morroco, chances are you’ll be drinking Touareg tea, also known as Maghrebi mint tea. This tea is a combination of mint leaves, green tea leaves, and a lot of sugar. This is also a tea that is easy to make at home and by omitting some of the sugar makes for a very healthy after dinner drink.

India

In India, the tea we know as chai is actually just the word for tea in Hindi. But, when you see chai in India, it is most likely going to be a blend of black tea leaves with an array of spices such as cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom, and pepper, which are all spices seen in a lot of Indian dishes.

United Kingdom

Most people know the English for being huge tea lovers. When you go to the UK, go to a tea room and sit down for a proper English tea. This includes different English black teas, along with small sandwiches and desserts.

Japan and Korea

While you might be used to filling up your own glass at a dinner, if you are in Japan or Korea and out with locals, that is not the way to go. Instead, fill the person’s glass who is sitting next to you and then they will reciprocate.

Middle East

When you are traveling throughout the Middle East, with a few exceptions, know that you will have to cover up. Even though it gets hot there, it is traditional to wear clothes that at least cover your knees, and some historic or ancient sites will not admit you if you are not dressed modestly. The best way to do that is with light fabrics like linen and cotton.

Africa

The Morgan Library And Museum

This library in the Murray Hill neighborhood of New York is also a combined museum which was previously the private library of the founder of JP Morgan. The architecture style is Renaissance and Palladian, and simply outstanding on the inside. Not many people know about this historic establishment, but it so worth your while!

Oblate Library

This library is located in the heart of Florence, Italy. The courtyard of this institution, along with the other designated outdoor spaces is simply perfect. The best part is that the cafe on the third floor has a direct view of the duomo-who could ask for anything more!
