Cooking with kids is such a good way to teach them life skills, put their math and logic to use, and help them better understand how to read directions. Starting off with something that doesn’t have a lot of ingredients or steps along with ingredients that are familiar to them will make the process that much easier. These cereal treat snacks are the perfect recipe to try that will not only satisfy their sweet tooth but yours as well.

Ingredients

The great thing about this recipe is that it’s completely customizable. Whatever cereal you happen to have on hand is what you will use for the recipe. Other than that, just marshmallows and butter are needed to complete this treat.

Method

  1. Melt the butter and marshmallows together either on the stovetop or in thirty-second intervals in the microwave
  2. Once they are melted, stir in the cereal and coat well
  3. Pour into a greased baking pan and wait for it to cool completely
  4. Cut into whatever shapes you want and enjoy!

If you want to take this treat to the next level, you can dip it in chocolate, cover it in sprinkles, or do both! You can also use a cookie cutter to make fun shapes and designs.

Cereal is what most people grow up on, and it is seemingly the easiest go to-breakfast meal. However, even though it can be convenient and inexpensive, you can pay the price later in the day. Cereal is usually loaded with sugar, which will inflate your blood sugar and then have it drop too low, not much long after you eat it. You also don’t get many vitamins, minerals, or other health benefits like good fats or fiber.

Instead, switch to muesli, a German breakfast cereal that has been around for over a hundred years. Its base is rolled oats, and from there, you can really customize it to whatever tickles your fancy. Here’s a recipe for muesli that is easy, sugar-free, and vegan!

Ingredients

For this muesli, you will need coconut flakes, rolled oats, brazil nuts, peanuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds and a flavorless oil. If you don’t like coconut or you only have certain types of nuts, use whatever you have!

Method

  1. If you have time, soak your nuts and seeds the night before, or for an hour in boiling water
  2. Chop the nuts and combine with the other dry ingredients in a bowl

So, maybe we have started to take some of these ‘findings’ with a large pinch of salt. That being said, sometimes science discovers things that we can really get behind. A great example of that particular phenomenon is finding that pizza is better for you than cereal!

So says dietician, Chelsey Amer, in a report by The Evening Standard. She says that compared with the typical cereal options that are available, pizza is a more balanced meal. She said that an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk are worth approximately the same number of calories. The thing is, she says, pizza contains far more protein, which helps to keep you fuller for longer.
