When it comes to becoming an expert in something, there is a popular idea that nothing beats experience. This idea wisely suggests that it doesn’t really matter how many books you’ve read on a subject, or how many YouTube videos you’ve watched. Unless you actually have real experience in the matter, you’ll never improve. Here’s why this is true.

Muscle Memory

Whatever it is you’re learning, it needs to somehow be contained within your muscle memory. By the way, we don’t just mean physical muscle memory—we also mean muscles of the mind. When you have experience, these muscles get strengthened.

The Intangibles

All aspects of life have something tangible and intangible. The tangibles can be measured and those are the things you’ll learn in books. Don’t get us wrong, it’s crucial to know that technical stuff, but it’s the stuff you can’t see—the intangibles—that are going to take you where you need to go.

All Scenarios

Another thing about experience is that it exposes you to all possible outcomes and it becomes part of you like the air you breathe. It’s not like the answers to a test that you have to remember. It literally becomes a part of who you are, and experience is the only thing that can really provide that.

Congratulations! You’ve gone through a set of rounds in a job interview process and you’re on the cusp of actually landing a new position. There’s only one problem. You still need to negotiate salary and that can be an uncomfortable prospect. Here’s what you need to remember before getting all worked up about it.

You’re An Asset

It’s quite common for people to start feeling imposter syndrome at this point. You start to wonder how you could possibly ask someone else to pay you more money, even though getting paid is the primary reason you were looking for the job in the first place. You need to understand that you are providing a service for them, and this should instill confidence in yourself.

It’s Not Personal

The second you see yourself as a valuable asset is the second you see the salary negotiation as merely transactional. You don’t have to worry about them not liking you as much as a result. They understand how it is because they’ve all been through the same process.

Now, that doesn’t mean that you should ask for a ridiculous salary that’s not within the frame of realistic expectations. It’s good to do your research and keep everything within realistic range, but at the same time you should be confident in yourself and not feel guilty for asking for more money. If they can give it to you, they will. If not, they’ll tell you!

In this day and age, one of the most popular ideas when it comes to building a career is that you should follow your passion. People who endorse this idea say cliches such as that when you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. However, American author Cal Newport begs to differ. In his popular book So Good They Can’t Ignore You, Newport argues that following your passion is a misleading concept that’s actually overrated.

Build Rare and Valuable Skills Instead

Newport argues in his book that while some people do have pre-existing passions, not everyone does. Furthermore, he states that it’s not enough to be “passionate” about something, because that in fact doesn’t guarantee happiness in one’s work, and it also doesn’t guarantee success.

Rather, Newport believes in the importance of building rare and valuable skills overtime, regardless if a person is passionate about it. He states that the more rare and valuable skills a person builds, the more they’ll be able to invest those skills into something called “career capital”, which can then enable a person to have more control and freedom in their career.

To paraphrase even further, Newport continues that one can actually grow to become passionate about a career as a result of building those rare and valuable skills—rather than the opposite approach of figuring out a pre-existing passion and following it blindly.

Job hunting is usually very stressful and terrifying, especially for young people and those who unexpectedly lost their job. Even if you feel a bit helpless, you should know there are plenty of things you can do to land the job of your dreams. These are only some of them.

Tidy up your resume

A stellar resume is the first thing you need if you want to land a new job. Make sure to update all your job descriptions, triple check if you accidentally forgot to write something down and finally ask a friend to read it.

Updating your Linkedin page is also important because this website is becoming more and more relevant nowadays.

Learn new skills

Job hunting usually means you’re doing a lot of research and reading dozens of job postings. Have you noticed that employers are looking for a specific skill that isn’t in your skill toolbox? Using this time to master new skills is probably the wisest thing you can do.

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to be productive while you’re job hunting. Most importantly, it’s the easiest way to learn new useful skills and create new contacts. Who knows, you might end up meeting a person who has great connections or knows about an awesome job opening.

The beginning of a new year is a great time to reevaluate your life and to see what areas you can improve. If you’ve been wondering if you should think about a new job, here are some signs to direct you.

Nothing is Changing

If you’re craving new and exciting work experiences but they never happen, if you’re stuck in the same position with the same salary for more than a few years, if nothing work-related brings you joy anymore — it’s definitely time to start thinking about other options.

You Have Other Offers

If you’ve had a few other offers recently but didn’t think it’s the right time for a job change, did you really give it enough thought? Other companies wanting you is a really good sign so you should at least check if you’re appreciated enough in your current company.

You Simply Fell It’s Time

If your gut is telling you it’s time for you to move on, then that’s probably what you should do. You never know what the future holds and it takes courage to make that first step, even when nothing is pushing you away from your current situation.

Being a freelancer comes with many perks, such as not having fixed work hours or being forced to work around coworkers you don’t like. Not having to commute also saves a ton of time.

But what about vacations? When you’re a freelancer, every day and hour you don’t work equals money not earned and that can put you under a lot of pressure.

Just like everyone else, you need vacations to rest and recharge, otherwise, you’ll burn out. Here’s how to build your vacation strategy and enjoy it guilt-free.

Let Your Clients Know

Communicate with each of your clients and let them know about the dates when you won’t be available. Do it in advance so they have time to set priorities and let you know what to do before your vacation and what can wait.

Find a Backup

It’s good to have someone reliable who can take on emergency projects that can’t wait for you to come back. You can do the same for that person when they take a break.

Finish Everything Before You Go

It’s not easy to relax if you go on a vacation with unfinished tasks waiting for you. Be realistic and do everything before you go, otherwise, you may end up crunched over a laptop when you should be on the beach.

Moving up in your career may be something you deserve, but you’ll get there faster if you know how to take a stand for yourself. This is typically more difficult for introverts who tend to quietly wait for things to happen instead of demanding them. Here’s what you can do to improve your career if you’re an introvert.

Know Yourself

You have qualities that set you apart from the rest. Find out what they are and use them to your advantage.

Take a Break When Needed

If your job has you working with people all day long, a lunch break to yourself will help you deal with the stress.

Find Ways to Network

Perhaps you’re avoiding crowded events or attending them even though you don’t want to. Find alternate ways to meet people from your profession, such as online groups.

Show That You Care

You may not be up for a Friday night out with your colleagues, but it’s nice to let them know you’re thankful they invited you. Show that you care about them by initiating some other group activity, even if that means bringing donuts for everybody on Monday morning.
