]]>When it comes to caffeine, there is the right amount that can help you starve off a headache as caffeine naturally narrows your blood vessels and relieves the pressure. This is why most migraine medicine includes caffeine. On the other side, consuming too much caffeine can actually give you a headache, as your body gets used to a certain amount of caffeine each day and when you stop drinking as much the blood flow rushes back to the brain, causing a headache.
To get rid of headaches, firstly start drinking lots of water—caffeine tends to dehydrate you which makes a headache worse, so start your day drinking water instead of coffee.
These headaches might push you to go cold turkey on caffeine, but this is not the best option. Instead, start cutting back slowly. Give your body time to adjust to less and less caffeine per day and the headaches will go too. 200 milligrams of caffeine per day or less is the number you want to aim for.
Also, start using natural energy sources instead of relying on caffeine every day, by sleeping well, getting more sunlight, and doing yoga or meditation.

]]>When you first wake up, your body gets a boost from the hormone that makes you alert, cortisol. Some scientists think drinking coffee during that boost can create even more cortisol than you need. Or, it can be a waste of caffeine because your body is already waking you up. It’s better to drink after breakfast when you need the boost more.
People often feel a lull in the afternoon, especially if they eat a big lunch. If you’re at work and need a pick-me-up, this can be a good time to have a cup of Joe. The extra boost may also help with concentration, and a nice warm drink is a lovely way to decompress mid-workday.
To help get psyched up before a workout, many people drink energy drinks or caffeine-induced protein shakes. These can raise energy levels for a higher-intensity workout. But, you don’t need to worry about fancy fitness drinks—coffee will do the job just fine.

]]>This drink is native to South America and it’s a leafy shrub variety related to the holly plant. Not to be mistaken with tea, it’s brewed like the beverage, and then consumed from a yerba mate straw with a filter called a bombilla. Yerba mate is somewhat earthy and bitter and the flavor takes some time to get used to.
The caffeine content of yerba mate falls between coffee and tea— an 8-ounce serving has 85 mg of caffeine and the same size serving of coffee contains about 130 mg of caffeine and green tea has around 50 mg. Unlike tea and coffee, yerba mate gives you long-lasting energy and you won’t feel jittery after drinking it.
In South American history, yerba mate is known as the “Gift of Gods” because of the healing powers of the drink. Yerba mate promotes good heart health, weight loss, and blood sugar management and the plant has 24 vitamins and minerals and 15 amino acids.

]]>Keto diets are super trendy now, but even though they’ll help you lose weight, they can disrupt your sleep. REM sleep and the number of times you wake-up per night increases with low-carbohydrate, high-fat diets.
Caffeine helps keep us awake during the day, but it’s best to avoid it before bedtime. There’s not much research on when to stop drinking coffee during the day as it really depends on the person. Don’t forget that it’s not just coffee that will impact your sleep—chocolate, tea, and sodas also contain caffeine.
Sodas, sports drinks, and juices aren’t the only drinks high in sugar; milk also contains lots of sugar. Try to stick to water a couple of hours before bedtime.
Alcoholic drinks might make you sleepy, but they affect your quality of sleep. They throw off your circadian rhythm and block your REM sleep.
