Focaccia is a type of Italian bread, similar to pizza dough, that can be used as a side dish for many meals or as sandwich bread. It’s a great choice for everyone, including vegetarians and vegans, who want delicious homemade bread that makes the whole house smell amazing.

Rosemary garlic focaccia may sound fancy, but it’s actually pretty easy to make. You don’t need any special equipment and the ingredients are also basic. It’s important to have high-quality extra-virgin olive oil as it gives the bread all the flavor. The olive oil doesn’t have to be too expensive—use the one you typically use for salads and other recipes. Here’s how to make your own focaccia bread.

Ingredients

  • 120 ml olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 tbsp fresh thyme or 1 tsp dried thyme

  • 1 packet dry yeast

Instructions

  1. Pour the oil in a cold skillet, and add minced garlic, thyme, rosemary, and pepper. Cook on low heat for 5-10 minutes until the ingredients combine, but don’t let the garlic turn brown.
  2. Mix water, yeast, and honey in a large bowl. Stir and let sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Add around 100 grams of flour and half of the garlic oil mixture, stir again, and let sit for another 5 minutes.
  4. Add the remaining flour and salt. Transfer the dough to a board sprinkled with flour and knead 10-15 minutes.
  5. Put the dough in a large bowl that you’ve oiled, cover with a warm and damp towel, and leave for an hour. It should rise nicely.
  6. After that time, heat the oven to 450 F. Oil the baking sheet with some garlic olive oil mixture and transfer the dough. Press it down so you get a flatbread.
  7. Drizzle the top of the dough with the remaining olive oil mixture. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and cool before serving.

Do you have some bread lying around on your counter that’s a couple of days old, but too stale to eat? Stale bread is the worst, but luckily, there’s a simple way to salvage it that doesn’t involve turning it into croutons. This two-step trick will make your bread fresh in no time.

The first step is to stick the bread under water and yes, we understand how silly that sounds. Stick the loaf of bread with the exposed or cut side facing away from the faucet and turn the tap on. You want the crust to get wet.

Are you thinking about making your own sourdough bread? If this idea sounds intimidating, we’re here to help you break it down and make your own bread in no time. The part that sounds the most complicated is making your own bread starter, but you’ll see that it’s actually not something you should be worried about.

The best thing is that you only need two ingredients and that you already have them at home. Sourdough starter is a live culture that you make using flour and water. The key ingredient is time, but that doesn’t mean that you need to work hard on it. It only requires five minutes of your time every day and you can have a ready culture in a week.

What should you do? Use a digital scale to measure 150 grams of flour and 150 grams of warm water. Mix them in a mason jar and leave it for an hour, then cover with a cloth and cover loosely.

24 hours later, you’ll need to feed your starter, but first, discard the most of it until you’re left with only 80 grams. Now add 100 grams of water and 100 grams of flour to it and mix again.

Repeat these steps in the next two-five days. After five to seven days since your first started, you’ll notice your starter becoming bubbly and gooey and developing a characteristic smell. This means it’s ready to be used.
