If you’re someone who considers themselves to be creative, then perhaps you know a thing or two about letting your muse guide you. There’s nothing better than allowing the creative spirit to flow through you as you hone your craft and work on whatever masterpiece you’re working on. But here’s the thing: it’s not just about creativity—and here’s why.

Technique Lays the Foundation

Many people in the creative field believe that passion and creativity is all you need, but this is so far from the case. In order to have a creative ground to walk on, you must have the technique to back it up. In order to compose a song, you have to be able to play an instrument. In order to paint a beautiful masterpiece, you have to be able to… well, paint.

Losing Sight

For some reason, many seem to associate technique with being robotic and cold. To be fair, it’s true that technique without passion can result in advanced, yet soulless work. However, that doesn’t mean you’re supposed to neglect the importance of technical skill as a result. The importance is to work on both, and find a way to seamlessly blend the two as one.

Crafternoons are a great way to spend time with friends and get those creative juices flowing. All you’ll need are some arts and crafts materials, a few pals, and a couple of hours after work or at the weekend and you’ve got all the ingredients for a successful crafternoon!

The Materials

You don’t need anything fancy to get your craft on! Paints, coloring pencils, felt tips and pastels, colored paper, wool, felt, sequins, beads—whatever you can get your hands on or that you have lying around. Raiding your kids’ art supplies is also never a bad idea!

The Project

Pick a project or a theme as a blank piece of paper can be intimidating to even the most seasoned of artists. Check out Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok for easy craft and design project ideas or take votes on what the theme should be. You could even just explore colors and shapes.

The Intention

A crafternoon should be all about having fun. The conversation flows when your hands are busy and working on a creative task can be fantastic for de-stressing. Don’t worry about the outcomes, just focus on the experience and enjoy!

Stamp collecting used to be all the rage back in the day. Perhaps an older relative of yours has an impressive stamp collection, and now it’s stored away in a dusty box in the attic. Making a collage is a great way to repurpose these old stamps and showcase their beautiful designs.

Go for the same theme

One way to create a stamp collage is to find stamps that have the same theme—it could be butterflies, flowers, birds, or whatever else you like. Then stick them on a canvas, and you have a gorgeous piece of art.

Go for the same color

Another option is to select stamps that are in the same or similar colors to one another to create a tonal piece. An advantage of going for a monochromatic design is that it will look really visually striking on your wall from a distance. You can also have fun cutting your collage into different shapes and setting it against a colorful background.

Create a design

The sky is the limit when it comes to the designs you can create with postage stamps. For those more experienced artists, why not let your mind run free and try an elaborate design?

If you’re an artist of any kind, this article will help you understand the importance of traveling. Whether you’re a musician, painter, sculptor, poet, or all of the above, creativity is something that’s obviously crucial to your productivity. Sometimes artists think that they’re better off working endlessly for hours on end in order to achieve the best results. But here’s why that’s not always a good idea.

Knowing Yourself

We’re not going to sit here and say that practice doesn’t make perfect. Refining your technical skills is crucial to improving your craft, but there are other important things as well.

If all you do is practice and never take a step back, you may be wandering aimlessly with no true direction. By traveling abroad and taking a break from your rigorous schedule, you may come to new realizations that’ll spark your creative flow like never before.

Art Within Life

When art is at its best, it reflects upon life itself. This is why consumers are touched by a poignant song, or a vivid painting—because they experienced something in their own past that allows them to identify with it.

Traveling around the world is a great way to not just get to know yourself, but also the world around you. Listening to the flow of the streetcars of Barcelona, or the waves of sunny California, impacts the way your brush stroke hits the canvas.

Life and art are connected to one another, and this is why we believe that your creativity will definitely improve if you travel!

Nathalie Lete exuberates pure talent. An artist through and through, her work isn’t restricted to one medium but rather spans entire industries: from fashion to stationery, ceramics to toys. Indeed, her whole lifestyle seems to revolve around art as can clearly be seen from the many snippets she shares on Instagram.

Lete’s house (an overgrown dollhouse that she nurtures with her husband and daughter) is in and of itself a piece of art. “We like wood, the furniture of the 60s and 70s along with black, gold shades,” shared the artist in a recent interview with Amara, admitting that quarantine meant she could further tend to her home, decorating it as she pleased. This mainly meant painting her walls with blooming flowers.

“What I liked especially was the idea of [creating] your own world, kind of a nest, just filled with your own art,” she further shared in an interview with My Modern Met. “From wall paintings to the rugs, from the fabrics to the lamps and everyday dishes. The idea is that you can transform a simple place and furniture found on the street into something special and personal.”

Based in Paris, Lete draws inspiration from her mixed background and multicultural upbringing. Born in 1964 to a Chinese father and a German mother, her work is mainly influenced by folk art. Its naive quality means it can appeal to a wide audience – from children to adults.

“I’m inspired by nature, flowers, animals, insects… and also a lot by vintage toys…” notes Lete. “I also love textiles, folk art… all the applied art in fact. When I was a student, I once saw a book about the Bloomsbury Group (The Bloomsbury Group was an influential group of associated English writers, intellectuals, philosophers, and artists, including Virginia Woolf & E.M. Forester) and I fell in love with this atmosphere.”

Take a peek inside her home, and scroll down to see some recent projects:

The monochromatic drawings of illustrator Henn Kim have been described as “poetic”, “minimalist” and “surreal”. When the South Korean artist was 17 years old, she stopped speaking. Kim struggled with crippling depression and insomnia during her late teens, which caused her to withdraw from the friends and family around her.

Art ultimately proved to be her saving grace. She spent her sleepless nights drawing. Besides being a form of therapy, it also helped Kim perfect her skills. “My head was full of words and images that I couldn’t release through my mouth – only through my art”, said the artist in an interview with the BBC.

And she never stopped drawing since. Her creations speak of love, dreams, and fantasies, all in an instantly recognizable style. The themes and aesthetics clearly strike a chord with many people, as Kim gained a following of 870,000 on Instagram. Her work was even featured on the cover of Sally Rooney’s 2018 bestseller Normal People. Two years before that, in 2016, she utilized her talent in a UNICEF project, in which she depicted the impact of pollution on children’s health.

To this day, Kim draws peace and joy from her artwork. Below, you can get a glimpse into the magical black and white world of her illustrations. Follow her Instagram for more.

Poetry slam has often been lambasted in media as overdramatic and a bit silly, but it actually has great value as a form of self-expression. Slam poetry, or spoken-word poetry, is contemporary poetry meant to be recited aloud with emotional drive. It often focuses on political issues or personal experiences which are close to the heart of the writer.

The poetry slam community is populated more heavily than many other art communities with members of marginalized groups and activists. The emotion most often associated with this community is anger and indeed these poems are often a call to action to improve the world around us.

However, poetry slam can be driven by any and all emotions including joy, humor, confusion, grief, and anything in between. Often poems deal with multiple emotions at once. The pieces may describe specific experiences, but many of the feelings they bring up are universal. This lets listeners from all walks of life connect to the work.

It is this aspect of poetry slam that is the most important: accessibility. Unlike more traditional poetry, the meaning behind the words is not hard to understand. You don’t need a college education or a natural talent to express yourself in this way. All you need is a drive or something you want to talk about. There are writing workshops to help people create poetry slam which can be helpful. But, anyone can be a part of this community and everyone who chooses to join it is valued.

Back in the day, you had to get out of the house and pay money to gain access to cutting-edge art. Whether it was going to a book store and purchasing the latest comic book by your favorite illustrator or just visiting the museum—it was never something you could do from the comfort of your own sofa.

However, times have changed, and luckily you now have limitless, free-of-charge access to numerous artistic talents. All you need is WiFi and an Instagram account. Here are three cool and talented Insta illustrators you should totally check out.

Haleydrewthis

Her super sweet illustrations, filled with gentle-yet-lively pastel colors, provide a genuine depiction of her emotional world and personal musings. From positive affirmations to anxiety confessions – her drawings are like an illustrated best friend.

Momowelch

If Haley is your loving bff, Mo must be that super-sarcastic one you go to when you need a shot of bitter truth. She is the proud author of How to Die Alone, after all, so she’s got a reputation to live up to. Mo talks about the darker sides of life, from bad dates to existential crisis; and she does it in the most graceful way ever.

Siberianlizard

This Insta profile is dedicated to the characters of two sweet ferrets named Meems and Feefs. Follow the Siberian Lizard Comics depicting these two mischievous creatures on their various day-to-day adventures, meeting different friends and discussing pressing (and less pressing) topics.
