Elevating your home decor doesn’t always require a hefty investment or a complete overhaul. Sometimes, a simple DIY project can transform a mundane item into a chic accessory that adds a touch of elegance to your space. Today, we’re diving into a fun and creative DIY project: turning a regular plastic tray into a stylish bathroom tray. 

Materials:

  • A plain plastic tray
  • Small cups (4 for the legs)
  • Strong adhesive glue
  • Spray paint 
  • Sandpaper (light grit)

Instructions:

  1. Begin by sanding the surface slightly so the paint adheres better. Then, wash and dry well.
  2. Apply a strong adhesive glue to the rim of each cup and press them onto the corners of the bottom of the tray. Allow the glue to dry according to the instructions on the package.
  3. Once the glue is dry, choose a spray paint color. Spray paint is preferable for its smooth finish, but make sure to do this step in a well-ventilated area or outdoors. Apply the paint in thin, even coats to avoid drips. 
  4. After the paint has fully dried, you can add a clear sealant for extra durability, especially if you anticipate your tray will frequently come into contact with water.
  5. Style your DIY tray with lotions, perfumes, and toiletries to enjoy.

Get Stuck In

Strange as it sounds, using up some energy on some household chores as soon as you walk in can be a good way to use up any pent-up frustration and settle into your evening. Prioritize Sleep Hygiene

Create a conducive sleep environment by keeping your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool. Invest in blackout curtains to block daylight, use earplugs or white noise machines, and set the thermostat to a comfortable and cool temperature.

Develop a Consistent Schedule

Aim for consistency in your sleep-wake cycle, even on days off. This helps regulate your body’s internal clock and enhances the overall quality of your sleep.

Strategic Napping

If you need to nap during your night shift, keep it short—around 20-30 minutes—to avoid grogginess. Plan your naps strategically, ideally during the first half of your shift.

There are many strategies for sleeping during the day to prepare for your first night on shift. One is to go to bed late the night before and sleep as late as you can the next day. The other strategy is to go to bed at a normal or early time the night before and wake up early, accomplish some tasks/chores or work out, and then take a nap before your shift.

Optimize Nutrition

Choose balanced meals that support sustained energy throughout your shift. Avoid heavy, greasy foods close to bedtime, and consider a light, nutritious snack if hunger strikes during the night.

Mindful Use of Stimulants

While caffeine can help you stay alert during your shift, limit its consumption towards the end of your work hours to avoid interference with your ability to fall asleep when you get home.

Block your Shifts

It is a good idea to schedule your shifts in a row rather than breaking them up if you can. This will make it easier to have a “normal” sleep schedule on your days off.

Exercise

Develop a workout routine that works for you such as low energy and weight lifting on the days when you’ve worked the night before and high energy/cardio workouts for the mornings of your first night shift of the week.

Working the night shift is challenging, but having a good support system and prioritizing sleep is key!

Long distance running is a great way to stay fit and it can be great fun to train for a target such as a marathon. Here are three ways to help you improve your overall cardio and get you closer to a long-distance running goal.

Build up to longer, slower runs gradually

When you’re working towards a running goal it can be tempting to try and cram as many miles in as possible, or to try and work on your speed at every chance you get. But this will likely lead to over-exhaustion and perhaps even injuries which will set you back. Instead, it’s better to build up gradually to longer and very slow runs that feel easy but accustom your legs to longer distances, whilst also developing your cardio fitness.

Do occasional interval training

It’s good to work in some occasional high-intensity training to complement your long-distance training. This could involve getting on a running track and running a lap at a fast pace, and then resting. If you repeat this process 4-5 times, that will be a good way to make some big improvements to your speed and overall fitness. It’s important however to not do more than 1 or 2 speed sessions per week if you are new to running.

Do cross-training

A great way to develop your cardio fitness and long-distance running performance whilst reducing your injury risk is to do other forms of exercise. Swimming is great as it is very low injury risk, whilst cycling is good for developing your leg muscles.

Elevating your home decor doesn’t always require a hefty investment or a complete overhaul. Sometimes, a simple DIY project can transform a mundane item into a chic accessory that adds a touch of elegance to your space. Today, we’re diving into a fun and creative DIY project: turning a regular plastic tray into a stylish bathroom tray. 

Materials:

  • A plain plastic tray
  • Small cups (4 for the legs)
  • Strong adhesive glue
  • Spray paint 
  • Sandpaper (light grit)

Instructions:

  1. Begin by sanding the surface slightly so the paint adheres better. Then, wash and dry well.
  2. Apply a strong adhesive glue to the rim of each cup and press them onto the corners of the bottom of the tray. Allow the glue to dry according to the instructions on the package.
  3. Once the glue is dry, choose a spray paint color. Spray paint is preferable for its smooth finish, but make sure to do this step in a well-ventilated area or outdoors. Apply the paint in thin, even coats to avoid drips. 
  4. After the paint has fully dried, you can add a clear sealant for extra durability, especially if you anticipate your tray will frequently come into contact with water.
  5. Style your DIY tray with lotions, perfumes, and toiletries to enjoy.

For most of us, the working day comes with its fair share of stresses and irritations. On a good day, we can leave these at the front door, but on a bad day, the evenings after work can be spent feeling anxious, frustrated, or overwhelmed. If you’re struggling to switch off after the working day, check out these tried and tested methods which should help you to relax and enjoy your evening.

Get Stuck In

Strange as it sounds, using up some energy on some household chores as soon as you walk in can be a good way to use up any pent-up frustration and settle into your evening. Choose a task you don’t hate – maybe the vacuuming, or washing up – put on some music and give yourself ten minutes to use up some of that leftover energy. The fact that you’re getting some housework done at the same time can only leave you feeling positive and productive.

Prioritize Sleep Hygiene

Create a conducive sleep environment by keeping your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool. Invest in blackout curtains to block daylight, use earplugs or white noise machines, and set the thermostat to a comfortable and cool temperature.

Develop a Consistent Schedule

Aim for consistency in your sleep-wake cycle, even on days off. This helps regulate your body’s internal clock and enhances the overall quality of your sleep.

Strategic Napping

If you need to nap during your night shift, keep it short—around 20-30 minutes—to avoid grogginess. Plan your naps strategically, ideally during the first half of your shift.

There are many strategies for sleeping during the day to prepare for your first night on shift. One is to go to bed late the night before and sleep as late as you can the next day. The other strategy is to go to bed at a normal or early time the night before and wake up early, accomplish some tasks/chores or work out, and then take a nap before your shift.

Optimize Nutrition

Choose balanced meals that support sustained energy throughout your shift. Avoid heavy, greasy foods close to bedtime, and consider a light, nutritious snack if hunger strikes during the night.

Mindful Use of Stimulants

While caffeine can help you stay alert during your shift, limit its consumption towards the end of your work hours to avoid interference with your ability to fall asleep when you get home.

Block your Shifts

It is a good idea to schedule your shifts in a row rather than breaking them up if you can. This will make it easier to have a “normal” sleep schedule on your days off.

Exercise

Develop a workout routine that works for you such as low energy and weight lifting on the days when you’ve worked the night before and high energy/cardio workouts for the mornings of your first night shift of the week.

Working the night shift is challenging, but having a good support system and prioritizing sleep is key!

Long distance running is a great way to stay fit and it can be great fun to train for a target such as a marathon. Here are three ways to help you improve your overall cardio and get you closer to a long-distance running goal.

Build up to longer, slower runs gradually

When you’re working towards a running goal it can be tempting to try and cram as many miles in as possible, or to try and work on your speed at every chance you get. But this will likely lead to over-exhaustion and perhaps even injuries which will set you back. Instead, it’s better to build up gradually to longer and very slow runs that feel easy but accustom your legs to longer distances, whilst also developing your cardio fitness.

Do occasional interval training

It’s good to work in some occasional high-intensity training to complement your long-distance training. This could involve getting on a running track and running a lap at a fast pace, and then resting. If you repeat this process 4-5 times, that will be a good way to make some big improvements to your speed and overall fitness. It’s important however to not do more than 1 or 2 speed sessions per week if you are new to running.

Do cross-training

A great way to develop your cardio fitness and long-distance running performance whilst reducing your injury risk is to do other forms of exercise. Swimming is great as it is very low injury risk, whilst cycling is good for developing your leg muscles.
