Healthy food is rarely a part of the Thanksgiving celebration, but there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be. It’s pretty easy to put a healthy twist on some of the most popular Thanksgiving dishes, and these five are a good place to start.

Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce is one of the most beloved Thanksgiving classics, but you shouldn’t opt for a canned version. It’s usually high in sugar and calories, and making your own is a much better option.

Mashed Potatoes

The first step to transforming mashed potatoes into a healthy dish is ditching gravy altogether. You can cut down on butter, and replace some of the potatoes with healthier veggies, such as cauliflower.

Apple Pie

Apple pies and the holiday season go hand in hand, and there are many ways to put a healthy twist on this beloved dessert. Whipped cream is best avoided, and you should also consider making homemade apple pie filling.

Turkey Stuffing

Sausage and bacon are usually used as the main ingredients in turkey stuffing, but you should try to cut down on them and make your stuffing healthier by using vegan ingredients.

Green Bean Casserole

Green bean casserole is the staple of Thanksgiving dinner, and it wouldn’t be the same without melted cheese, but you can use less of it to make it healthier.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it is time to start planning the menu. Obviously, the turkey will be there, but dessert is just as important. There are some traditional desserts like pumpkin pie, that are always a crowd-pleaser but sometimes it’s nice to mix it up. Here are some new desserts to serve your guests.

Pumpkin Cupcakes

If you still want the traditional taste of pumpkin pie, but in a cake form, pumpkin-flavored cupcakes are the perfect treat. Ice them with some cream cheese icing, and a little pumpkin candy.

Pecan Pie

One pie that is delicious during every season, is pecan pie. The custard layer, combined with the pecan filling is going to leave your guests begging for more.

Apple Crumble

As Thanksgiving falls towards the end of the harvest season, crisp apples are available by the bushel. Grab a bunch of apples, and make individual apple crumbles for your guests. Add a dollop of whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream to make this even tastier.

Gingerbread Bundt Cake

Bundt cakes are excellent dessert or coffee cakes. They’re easy to slice, and when it comes to the fall the smell of gingerbread in cake form has everyone drooling. Add a maple drizzle to the cake, and it is sure to be the star of the night.

Thanksgiving is all about food and being thankful, but by the end, you always end up with so many leftovers. If you want to use them all up in a smart way, follow these tips.

Transform It

There are so many creative ways to turn your Thanksgiving leftovers into new and innovative dishes. You can put your extra turkey and veggies into a quiche with a storebought pie dough and some eggs, you can go with a play on chicken and waffles and do turkey and waffles with sweet cranberry sauce, or try out your own recipes!

Freeze It

While making more recipes with Thanksgiving leftovers is a good idea, sometimes you just want to save some food for later! Freezing is a great idea and lets you have Thanksgiving all over again whenever you like. Any turkey leftovers can be frozen for up to 3 months, mashed potatoes made with dairy will last up to 1 year, and even your dinner rolls can be stored and saved for up to 3 months.

Thanksgiving is all about the food, and the upcoming holiday season can wreak havoc on our diets. It’s important to enjoy yourself during the holiday season but to stay on track of your goals and nutrition. The good news is you can still enjoy all your favorite festive foods, while keeping to your diet, with these tips.

Don’t Skip Meals

When preparing for the Thanksgiving meal many people skip meals to account for all the calories they are about to take in. In actuality, this is harmful because, by the time you’re ready to eat, you’ll be so hungry that you’ll end up overeating.

Instead, begin your day with a hearty breakfast and lunch that’s full of healthy food like salads and veggies.

Be Active

A little bit of exercise goes a long way. You can start your day off with some exercise like a turkey trot or yoga, or after you eat go for a walk outside with your family, instead of napping after a heavy meal.

Portion Control

Thanksgiving food is full of creamy sauces, high-fat entrees, and sugary desserts and the key to feeling satiated is keeping a balanced plate. The best ratio to follow is 1/2 your plate should be vegetables, 1/4 of your plate should be proteins, and 1/4 should be whole grains or nutrient-rich carbs.

Pick Your Favorites

Restricting the food you allow yourself to indulge in almost always backfires. It’s okay to enjoy a couple of your favorite foods; Thanksgiving only happens once a year. Go ahead and don’t beat yourself up over that slice of pumpkin pie you ate!
