During practice, don’t try to completely avoid thoughts, but stay alert and focus as much as possible on the sights and sounds around you, body sensations, and breathing.
Occasionally, and especially during times of emotional turmoil, try the practice for longer periods, practice concentration several times a day, go out to practice in nature, or join a meditation group.
