]]>The team announced that they have released Matthews on Wednesday. The former second-round pick from 2014 didn’t take the field this season.
Matthews joined the 49ers for his second stint back in 2019 but was only featured in one game last season. He was resigned to the team’s practice squad back in November, as the team struggled with injuries while also having to place players on COVID-19/Reserve list.
In recent weeks, however, the 49ers became notably healthier, and the majority of their top choices at the wideout position returned to action. This made Matthews expendable, so the move didn’t come as a surprise.
We’re left to see whether Jordan Matthews manages to land a spot on another team before the 2020 NFL season wraps up. Despite some rough patches in recent years, which saw him being released four times in the last three years, Matthews could still have a place in the league considering he’s only 28 years old.
Matthews has 274 career receptions for 3,288 yards and 22 touchdowns since entering the NFL. The majority of this production came during his first three years with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Another important member of the defensive front, Solomon Thomas, tore his ACL and he’ll also be out for the rest of the season.
Even starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered from an injury—a high-ankle sprain which will likely causes him to miss a few weeks. And it doesn’t end there—starting running back Raheem Mostert and his backup Tevin Coleman also suffered from injuries.
Head coach of the 49ers Kyle Shanahan said that players were complaining about the sticky turf at MetLife Stadium and that they were worried they were going to get injured. Of course, the NFL is looking into the issue more carefuly.
We hope the issue gets solved before the 49ers take on the Giants at MetLife Stadium next week.
