]]>Cucumber is a staple food to many, but there is a trick to knowing if it’s ripe or not. All you do is squeeze both ends with your fingers, and if it feels hard, it’s good! If it’s soft, it’s already gone a bit bad.
These delicious jewel tone fruits can be quite expensive, so when you buy them you want to make sure they’re ripe! The best way to tell is to feel them and see if they’re heavy. Even if it’s a small one, it should feel heavy which means the seeds are ripe and full of juice.
Pineapples are an amazing tropical fruit but can be difficult to judge on ripeness. The best way to see if it’s ready is by pulling out one of the inner leaves at the top. If it comes out easily, it’s ready to eat! If not, give it more time.

]]>For this wash, all you need to do is combine 1 part vinegar and 4 parts water in a spray bottle. In addition to that, add in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, Mix it well in the spray bottle. Then, put all the fruits and vegetables you want in a colander and spray the produce. Let it sit for 2-5 minutes, and wash it off well.

For leafy greens, you do need a slightly different solution. The same 1 part vinegar and 4 parts water apply, but instead of 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, use 1 tablespoon of salt. Put the greens in a colander and spray all over. Leave it for 2-5 minutes and then wash off well. Dry with paper towels and spin dry in a salad spinner.

The USDA has different visual grading standards for all fruits and vegetables. These standards are solely based on the appearance of the food, not nutritional value or freshness. Supermarkets mostly carry grade 1 food, but if you find any deformed or slightly different looking produce, buy it! There is a chance no one else will, so make sure that all the labor and money that went into that piece of produce gets used.
Also, try to shop at farmers markets as much as you can, as they sell almost all of their products that are grown, whether it is necessarily beautiful or not. This will also help small business grow and gives back to the community.
