Going to the salon to get a pedicure is a nice way to treat yourself, but it’s important to keep your feet at their best even between the salon visits. As many of us are currently forced to stay at home and miss out on beauty salons, among many other things, here’s how you can give yourself a perfect pedicure at home.

1. Remove Nail Polish

The first step should always be removing the old nail polish so you can give your nails the chance to absorb the ingredients from the products you will use later. Even if you didn’t have any polish on, wiping the nails with a cotton pad soaked in nail polish remover will remove any oils and dirt.

2. Soak

Enjoy as your feet are soaking for around 15 minutes in warm water and soap of your favorite smell. You can use this time to relax, read, or try a new face mask.

3. File and Moisturize

After you’ve removed the excess water from your feet, use a file to get rid of dead skin and moisturize your whole feet.

4. Shape Nails

Shorten your toenails and use a file to achieve the desired shape. You can trim or cut the cuticles if you want at this point and apply cuticle oil.

5. Paint Nails

Choose your favorite color and paint your nails in two thin layers, but make sure to apply the base coat before that and a quick-drying top coat after.

Flip flop and sandal weather is in full swing, but before you’re ready to show off your new footwear, you need to get your toes ready. With salons closed, it’s time you learned how to give yourself a pedicure. If you want the full salon experience find a comfy spot, play some music, light some candles, and get your tools ready. Here’s your step by step guide for getting the perfect pedicure.

Step 1: Soak Your Feet

Start by buffing and drying the rough spots with a foot file and clean your nails with cotton soaked in nail polish remover. Then soak your feet in a bowl of warm water and a foot soak for 10 minutes before drying them with a towel.

Step 2: Shape Your Cuticles and Nails

Use a cuticle softer and gently push back the thick layer of skin around your toenails with a cuticle pusher and if you need to, use your cuticle trimmers. When your cuticles are ready, shape them with a nail file.

Step 3: Exfoliate and Moisturize

Exfoliate with a scrub by buffing it onto your feet and lower legs and then rinsing it. File the rough spots and then dry your feet with a towel.

Step 4: Apply Nail Polish

Here’s the part you’ve been waiting for—painting your nails. Start by applying nail polish remover over your nails to give them a clean start. Put on a base coat, two coats of color, and a top coat, making sure each coat is dry before applying the next one. If you’ve made any mistakes, don’t worry about it—you can get rid of them with an angled makeup brush dipped in nail polish remover. Finish your pedicure off with a cuticle oil.

Milk Bath

Fill a basin with equal parts of water and milk, add a few drops of lavender oil, and soak your feet for five to ten minutes. Milk will help you get rid of the dead skin and leave your feet smooth.

Remove Corns With Salicylic Acid

You don’t have to go to a salon for this. You can buy salicylic acid pads that you can use as an effective remedy against corns.

Scrub

Remove the remaining dead skin by scrubbing your feet with a pumice stone or your preferred tool.

Hydrate

Your feet need hydration, just like the rest of your skin. Create a habit of applying a hydrating cream on them in the evening.

Nail Polish

Paint your toe nails in your favorite color as a finishing touch.

This strange beauty trend has you place your feet into a tank full of Garra rufa fish, which proceed to eat away at the dead skin on your feet without injuring or drawing blood.

The fish aren’t biting, they’re more like sucking off your dry skin. They’re like little vacuum cleaners. Celebrities such as Mena Suvari and Jessica Simpson swear by the treatment.

The trouble is that the fish are literally starving, relying on the dead human skin for sustenance. They could also be damaged by poor water quality, especially when people put their feet in the water when they are wearing cosmetics.

Because the fish are being used multiple times, there is a danger of passing skin infections among clients. The fish might even be carrying diseases themselves, as well as dangerous bacteria.

It’s also worth noting that the fish are using the same water your feet are in as a toilet so that their waste is floating around you.

For various reasons, more than 10 states have banned the practice of fish spa pedicures. The potential for these exotic fish to enter the water system and the ecosystem is high, too high to justify this practice, according to many.
