Chicago Blackhawks announced on Tuesday that their captain Jonathan Toews won’t be joining the team for a training camp ahead of the 2020/21 season.

According to the announcement, Toews is currently dealing with an undisclosed illness and will be out indefinitely.

“Until I can get my health back to a place where I feel I can perform at an elite level and help my team, I will not be joining the Blackhawks for training camp,” said Toews in a statement. “I do not have a timetable for when I will rejoin the team.”

This is a tough blow for the Blackhawks, considering they will be without promising center Kirby Dach and forward Alex Nylander to start the season. Dach recently broke his wrist while on international duty with Canada, while Nylander underwent knee surgery earlier this month. Both players are expected to miss four to six months of action.

Blackhawks are undergoing a rebuild at the moment but decided to keep Jonathan Toews in hopes that he can be a mentor to their younger players. Toews spent his entire NHL career in Chicago and played an important part on three Stanley Cup-winning teams in the past decade.

In 943 games in Blackhawks’ jersey, Toews scored 345 goals and dished 470 assists for a total of 815 points. He has a Conn Smythe Trophy from 2010 and was named an All-Star on five occasions.

Ottawa Senators announced on Tuesday that they have reached a contract agreement with center Chris Tierney. According to the team, Tierney inked a two-year deal worth $7 million.

Tierney, who finished the 2019/20 with 11 goals and 26 assists for 37 points, was a restricted free agent and heading toward an arbitration hearing next month.

In a statement issued after the deal was made official, Senators’ general manager Pierre Dorion said that he’s pleased with keeping Tierney in Ottawa and that the team views as an important piece of their lineup.

“He’s a reliable veteran who has very good hockey sense and who is consistently among our best centers in faceoff success rate,” said Dorion.

Chris Tierney started his career with San Jose Sharks, where he played 284 games in four seasons and accumulated 104 regular-season points. Sharks traded him to the Senators in 2018 as part of the deal that landed them All-Star defenseman Erik Karlsson.

Tierney has increased his average production since coming to Ottawa, as he managed to score 20 goals, and dish 65 assists in 152 appearances on ice.

Boston Bruins announced over the weekend that they have inked defenseman Matt Grzelcyk to a four-year deal, allowing the two sides to avoid arbitration.

Grzelcyk, who was born in Boston and grew up just a mile from the Bruins’ arena, will get $14.5 million throughout his new contract. This includes $2.25 million in base salary next season, $4 million in 2021/22, and $4.25 million in both 2022/23 and 2023/24 NHL season.

Despite the shortened season, Grzelcyk finished the 2019/20 with career highs in all departments. He played 68 games while contributing with seven goals and 14 assists for a total of 21 points.

This made Bruins believe the 26-year-old Grzelcyk can make an even bigger leap in the future year, which is why they made a push to come to terms with Grzelcyk before the arbitration hearing on Tuesday. The two sides eventually managed to agree in the past few days and hammer out a deal that everyone can be happy with.

“We’re excited to have Matt signed … It took a while to find a landing spot. There are a lot of variables in play,” Bruins Don Sweeney told reporters after the deal was confirmed. “As far as how far apart we were, we had a gap. We had to breach some things. We had to work at it.”

Matt Grzelcyk was selected by Boston Bruins in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft with the 85th overall pick. He spent the following four years at college before making his NHL debut during the 2016/17 season.

Grzelcyk has 197 NHL games under his belt, having contributed with 10 goals and 44 assists.
