Even if your make-up brushes look clean, chances are, if you haven’t cleaned them in more than a couple of weeks, there is some bacteria growth there. Here’s a simple cleaning process you can do once a week to keep your brushes fresh.

Cleaning Solution

Find a gentle liquid soap or baby shampoo, and mix a small amount with water.

Clean the Brushes

Dip the wet brush into the cleaning solution. Gently swirl the brush in your hand to help remove the built-up makeup. Be careful not to wet the metal part connecting the bristles to the handle because it can weaken the glue over time.

Rinse Thoroughly

Rinse the brush under running water, keeping the bristles pointing downwards to prevent water from getting into the handle and glue.

Shape the Brushes and Remove Excess Water

Reshape the brush bristles with your fingers if they get misshapen during cleaning. Then, gently squeeze the excess water out of the brush using a clean towel or paper towel.

Dry

Finally, lay the brushes flat on a clean towel so that they can dry naturally. It’s best to let them rest overnight so that they’re completely dry by your next use.

If you have the perfect skincare routine, a healthy diet, and are still prone to breakouts, the source of your skin troubles could be in your makeup bag. We all know that not cleaning your face properly after wearing foundation is a big no-no if you want clear skin, but the culprit might actually be the tool you use to apply your makeup with.

We all know that we should clean our makeup brushes, but most of us are guilty of going long periods without giving them a thorough clean. If your makeup brushes and sponges are caked in makeup, this could be why your skin still has the odd zit or blemish when you are doing everything else right.

To clean your brushes, run them under lukewarm water with an anti-bacterial soap. Handwash your brushes and then run water over them until the water runs clear. If there is still residue on the brush, repeat this step.

After all the brushes have been rinsed, lay them out on your window sill. Be patient and wait for them to fully dry. When they have dried, you are good to go and apply makeup with your freshly-cleaned brush.

Until recently, women exclusively used their fingers to apply makeup. Things have changed over the past years and now we have a variety of tools available for this task. First, we experimented with brushes, then beauty blenders, and today we feel the need to stop and ask which of these tools is actually the best choice.

While there are many types of brushes for different purposes, today we’re discussing the foundation brushes and comparing them to sponges, a.k.a. beauty blenders. Using fingers to apply foundation is not hygienic and doesn’t give good results, so we already ruled it out.

Brushes

Brushes were the first major upgrade from using fingers to apply foundation. They come in different styles and quality which affects the result they provide. The downside is that they can leave brushstroke marks if you’re not careful.

Sponges

Sponges or beauty blenders are many women’s favorite foundation tools. They allow for better blending and prevent marks. They should be used wet, which can be inconvenient sometimes, but the result on your face will be natural and even.

Cleaning your makeup brushes sounds like a daunting task and you are not wrong – it actually is. Still no matter how boring this sound, cleaning your makeup brushes on a regular basis is extremely important.

Not only can dirty makeup brushes make it very hard to apply makeup, but they can also cause breakouts, irritate your skin, and create all sorts of skin problems.

How often we need to wash them depends on how much we actually use them, but experts do suggest it’s best to clean them a couple of times a month.

So how do you clean makeup brushes? Soaking them in a cup of water doesn’t sound like a great plan, right? You can use soap, a gentle face cleanser or baby shampoo but if you’re not up to experimenting, there are plenty of makeup brush cleansers on the market you can choose from.

There are also a lot of DIY recipes you can try at home, and you can also take a look at this video by beauty YouTuber Nicole. She filmed an in-depth video on how to clean, disinfect and condition makeup brushes and her advice can be of great help.

Makeup brush sets often come with dozens of different brushes you’re not really sure how to use. Whenever you buy a set, there will be a few brushes you’re absolutely never going to use. But if you’re inexperienced, there’s no way for you to know which of them you actually need and which will just lay there in your makeup bag. After practicing your makeup skills for a while, you’ll learn which brushes you use more often. Here’s our list to help you get started.

Foundation Brush

You’ll either need a brush or a makeup sponge to apply the foundation that looks impeccable. The foundation brush needs to be made of synthetic hair, it should be thick and flat.

Setting Brush

You’ll use a setting brush to apply the setting powder for a perfect finish. Setting brushes are big, puffy, round, thick, and also made of synthetic hair.

Bronzer/Blush Brush

This brush will help you add some color to your face and it’s usually a bit smaller than a setting brush but similar in shape.

Eye Brushes

You can start with two brushes for eyeshadow — one for applying the shadow and one for blending. The first one needs to be small and flat so you can apply the product where you want it. The blending brush is a bit bigger and puffier and you will use it to remove harsh makeup lines on your eyelids.
