]]>Recipe developer, food stylist, and cookbook author Dana Shultz is one of those guardian angels. The mastermind behind the successful food blog-turned viral Instagram page, Minimalist Baker, her goal is to make cooking a lot more easier and approachable.
“All eaters are welcome,” reads her website’s caption, as she invites the most novices of cooks to take a (tiny) leap of faith. The idea is simple: Shultz shares recipes that require 10 ingredients or less, 1 bowl, or 30 minutes or less to prepare. The meals vary (from savory to sweet) and most are plant-based. Shultz also shies away from fancy/expensive ingredients.
“Minimalist Baker was born out of a desire to make simple cooking available to the everyday cook—like me,” explained the recipe developer in an interview with Portland Monthly. “I would go and look at recipes on blogs and was generally evaluating whether or not I’d make the recipes based on how much time, equipment, and number of ingredients they required. I wanted simple, and it wasn’t there.”
Shultz’s intuition—that there’s a market for simple recipes—proved correct, and these days her fanbase on Instagram alone is staggering (some 2 million followers to date, and counting!).
“Our plans include continuing to perfect and improve what we already do on Minimalist Baker, which is to provide simple, plant-based recipes that are mind-blowingly delicious,” says Shultz. “If we can keep doing that, I think there will always be a place for us in the internet world and beyond.”
Get cooking! You have no excuse!

]]>For D.C. area natives, Justin Schuble posts about the latest and greatest meals that he’s found. As the capital of the United States, D.C. is a multicultural political hotbed. As a result, it has a little bit of everything mixed into the pot. You never know what you’re going to see, whether it’s a barbeque street fair or a mainstream staple like Georgetown Cupcake, but it is undoubtedly going to make you salivate.
Just looking at this Instagram page will make your stomach rumble. Featuring some of the most appetizing (and fattening) dishes you’ll have seen today, NYCFAT is worth a follow just for how good the food that they post looks alone. A lot of New York staples like delicatessen and pizza are given attention, but they also have some great looking pastas. A recent attention grabber was one of the more interesting dishes featured, “seared scallops and avocado yuzu over cauliflower rice.”
If you think LA food starts and ends with tacos, you are sorely mistaken. Sure, LA is known to have some of the best Mexican restaurants around, and it does. But you will be pleasantly surprised to find so many enticing things on @laphoodies Instagram other than tacos. She really tries a bit of everything, and even better, she’ll keep you up to date on the newest healthy food trends coming out of California.

]]>But when it comes to his review style, Lau likes to keep things simple. “There are only so many words you can use to describe certain foods, so I write based on my emotions,” he explained once in an interview with HungryGoWhere. “I try not to be too factual, as I want the people who have not tasted the food before to be able to relate to the descriptions.”
His work is also very thorough. “I always make it a point to inquire everything about the restaurant—from its chef, to its dishes, to the philosophy behind the cooking and its operating hours,” says Lau, explaining that this information allows for a comprehensive post-session review.
Oddly enough, his reviews don’t include star ratings. “I do not give a star rating for my reviews as I believe food is subjective,” he explains. “I always encourage my readers to try things with an open mind. ‘Food’ is definitely the most important criterion—I will eat at a place as long as it serves good food. It’s okay if it has crappy service and no ambiance.”
His Instagram page and accompanying website is a haven for foodies, both inside and outside of Singapore.
