]]>Vipassana, which means “to see things as they really are”, is one of the oldest forms of meditation, originating in India from the teachings of the Buddha over 2,500 years ago. It was preserved and revitalized in Burma (present-day Myanmar) by a long lineage of teachers. The technique involves observing bodily sensations in a systematic way to cultivate present-moment insight. Unlike other forms of meditation, Vipassana emphasizes strict silence and detachment from all forms of communication and indulgence (food or otherwise).
The standard Vipassana retreat lasts 10 days and requires participants to adhere to a strict schedule that includes many hours of seated meditation each day. First-time participants are given three meals a day, while returning participants only receive two. There are 245 retreat centers around the world, and each center is run by volunteers and nobody in the Vipassana community is paid or has to pay. The Vipassana meditation community functions on a donations-only basis.
Many participants report increased mental clarity, emotional resilience, and a greater sense of peace and well-being. The practice helps break the cycle of reactive thinking and develop a more balanced, equanimous mind. Physically, extended periods of meditation can improve posture and even alleviate chronic pain conditions through increased body awareness.
