The Houston Rockets stunned the Golden State Warriors with a dramatic 91-90 victory in the NBA Cup quarterfinals, advancing to the semifinals in Las Vegas. In a game filled with tension and controversy, a late-game sequence involving a questionable foul call sealed the Rockets’ win, leaving Warriors coach Steve Kerr fuming over the officiating.

Deciding Moment

The game’s pivotal moment came with 3.5 seconds left on the clock. Golden State’s Gary Payton II, attempting to secure the ball while on the ground, was called for a foul after Houston’s Jalen Green made a steal. Green subsequently sank two free throws, giving Houston the lead. Despite having a final possession, the Warriors’ Brandin Podziemski had his game-winning shot blocked, sealing Golden State’s fate.

The Rockets were led by Alperen Şengün, who delivered a stellar performance with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga topped his team’s scoring with 20 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Houston’s resilient defense, which held the Warriors to just 37 points in the first half.

Steve Kerr’s Anger

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was furious with the controversial call both during and after the game. During the postgame press conference, CBS Sports reported that Kerr did not mince words, criticizing the referee: “I’ve never seen that. I think I saw it in college one time 30 years ago. Never seen it in the NBA. That is unconscionable. I don’t even understand what just happened. Loose ball, diving on the floor 80 feet from the basket and you’re gonna give a guy two free throws to decide a game when people are scrambling for the ball? Give them a timeout and let the players decide the game.” Referee Billy Kennedy explained to a pool reporter that the foul was justified due to Kuminga making contact “in the neck and shoulder area.”

The Rockets, now boasting a 16-8 record, snapped their 15-game losing streak against the Warriors, dating back to 2020. Houston’s young roster showcased remarkable poise, with Jabari Smith Jr. adding 15 points to the effort. The Warriors, meanwhile, suffered from five empty possessions in the game’s final minutes, including multiple shot-clock violations.

The win propels Houston to the NBA Cup semifinals, highlighting the growth of their promising core. For Golden State, the loss marks a bitter end to their Cup campaign and a missed opportunity for a shot at the inaugural in-season tournament title.

Golden State will look to bounce back in regular-season play after their seventh loss in their last nine games, while the Rockets prepare to carry their momentum into Las Vegas, aiming for a shot at the Cup championship.

DeMarcus Cousins will get another chance to resurrect his NBA career. This time it’s the Houston Rockets who are taking a gamble on a talented but injury-prone big-man.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Cousins and the Rockets agreed to a one-year deal on Monday. The contract is reportedly non-guaranteed.

Cousins joins the Rockets after failing to play a single game in the NBA last season. He started 2019/20 with LA Lakers but tore his ACL in the preseason and was forced to miss the entire campaign.

The injuries have been the story of DeMarcus Cousins’ career in recent years. Besides the ACL tear, he also had an Achilles injury in 2018 while with New Orleans Pelicans and a quadriceps tear in 2019 while playing for Golden State Warriors.

It remains to be seen whether a fresh start in Houston can help Cousins get his once-promising career back on track.

The 30-year-old Cousins was once regarded as one of the game’s best centers and has four All-Star nods and two All-NBA selections to his name. His NBA career averages include 21.2 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game.

According to numerous reports, Houston Rockets star Russell Westbrook left a grandiose $8,000 tip for the housekeepers of the Grand Floridian hotel, where he resided during his time in the NBA bubble this season.

In an interview with Bleacher Report, Westbrook confirmed the legitimacy of the story, explaining that his actions were a show of gratitude.

“They took great care of us. Took the time and energy to do their job at a high level. That was the right thing. I like to do the right thing.” Westbrook explained.

According to Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News, Westbrook left his hotel room in pristine condition. This falls in line with Westbrook’s reputation for being a “neat freak”.

While he did not confirm the exact amount of the tip, this form of charitable act has become something of a routine for Westbrook.

Thanks to his involvement in charitable efforts and community upliftment, Westbrook won the NBA Cares Community Assist Award in the 2014/15 season.

Some of his charitable efforts include raising money for his Why Not? Foundation, aimed at providing children with the education and support they need to achieve their goals.
