]]>This year, things look a little bit different and local shops and businesses need all the support they can get. Buying goods and services from them can keep them afloat during this difficult time. Here are a couple of ways you can shop local and help your community by doing so.
You don’t have to shop in-store to support a business. Many businesses have entered the online marketplace, which makes shopping easier than ever. Simply buying a gift card from your local shop, can support them tremendously. It also gives the gift card receiver the chance to pick out something they really want.
Shopping local is in itself a great way to support locally run stores, but buying products made in your own community is even better. A lot of these small-batch creators don’t make a large number of products, like jewelry, bath salts, and clothing. That means every purchase is helping them stay afloat.
We all know that social media is the best place to advertise, especially Instagram and TikTok. If you buy a locally made product or have a shop you love, promote them on your social media channels. This will give other potential customers gift ideas, and drive up sales for your favorite local stores.

]]>For office or cocktail parties, you can bring vegetable platters with hummus, tahini, or sour cream dips or fruit platters with a Greek yogurt dip. While this doesn’t sound all that exciting when you compare it to the baked goods and alcohol, we’re sure a bunch of your friends and coworkers will enjoy munching on the platters you bring.
If you’re invited to a potluck style dinner, offer to bring a salad or vegetable side dish. If the host asks you to bring dessert, opt for a fruit salad sprinkled with date syrup and toasted chopped pistachios or almond slices.
If you’ve chosen not to drink this holiday season, bring mocktail ingredients or sparkling water and bitters or flavored syrups, so you can still join in on the toasts.
Most importantly, you should never feel awkward about your dietary restrictions as there is usually someone else present with the same or stricter restrictions. Also, if you want to enjoy some sweats or a drink, just go for it. After all, it is holiday season!

]]>Remember that you have total control over where your money goes and spend it on brands you believe in. These can be locally run shops or anything else that makes you feel like you’re making a difference. Also, there’s no need to spend too much—it’s the thought that counts.
Once you decide to get your seasonal gifts at small businesses, remember that they typically don’t have the same capacity as big chains so shop early before they sell out. Have realistic expectations about shipping and other details and plan to shop ahead of time.
Gifts don’t necessarily have to be new. In fact, when you know a person really well, you can make an effort to thrift a first edition of their favorite book or a vintage fashion piece they will wear for years. Just keep an open mind and have fun shopping!
