One of the most romantic moments in Bridgerton’s first season is when Daphne tells the Duke of Hastings, “I burn for you”. We’re hoping that that sensation feels a lot more pleasant than heartburn! The latter is caused by stomach acid making its way up into the esophagus, resulting in an uncomfortable burning feeling in the chest and upper abdomen—AKA something we’d rather avoid.

Some foods are more prone to causing acid reflux than others (hello, tomatoes!), but luckily there are also foods that can prevent heartburn from showing up uninvited.

Alkaline Foods

Alkaline is the natural adversary to acid, making it one of the good guys. Foods with a pH below seven are considered to be acidic, while those about seven are on the alkaline end of the scale. It’s important to achieve a balance within the body. Stick to foods like bananas, cauliflower, and nuts (and yes, milk) if acid reflux is getting you down.

Watery Foods

While it is a very bad idea to put water on battery acid, studies say that foods with a high water content can help to dilute stomach acid. Watermelon, celery, and lettuce should prevent the burn.

High-Fiber Foods

Aside from keeping you regular (always a good thing!), foods rich in fiber keep you fuller for longer. As acid reflux can sometimes be the result of over-eating, foods like sweet potatoes, broccoli, and brown rice will keep the hunger pangs at bay (and keep the heartburn away!)

From time to time, everyone suffers from a little bit of heartburn. More often than not, it is nothing to worry about and is associated with no problematic underlying causes. Still, heartburn can be uncomfortable and avoiding it is preferable. Here are some tips for keeping your tummy happy.

Keep Portions Small

When indulging in a rich dessert, keep portions small. If you are planning on having a weekend binge, sip water in between and don’t eat a big portion in one sitting. Spacing it out is better for digestion.

Eat Little and Often

Eating little and often is a good way to keep your tummy happy. If you get groggy after eating, reducing your portion sizes and eating light meals throughout the day should improve digestion and boost your energy levels.

Don’t Eat Before Bedtime

To avoid late-night discomfort, tuck into your last meal at least two hours before bedtime. It’s best to have your last drink around this time too. That way, your sleep cycle isn’t disturbed by digestion.

Eat Mindfully

Often, we eat our meals quickly before moving onto the next task at hand. Making the time to eat our meals slowly can improve our health. Chew mindfully and savor each mouthful. Make mealtimes synonymous with me-time.

Avoid Fizzy Drinks and Spicy Foods

If you suffer from heartburn often, it might be sensible to cut back on fizzy drinks and spicy foods. Fatty foods and smoking are also major causes of heartburn.
